Finicky Fish

Waited out the storms on John’s Island yesterday to get a chance at seeing some tailers. When it wasn’t raining, conditions were incredible. I actually got about a half hour to myself with no wind, no boats, no rain, no people, and calm flats with water slowly rising…the kind of thing I anticipate every time I go to the flat, but rarely get to see.

Saw good fish early, then as another storm rolled up, they seemed to shut down and start lazily cruising instead of actively tailing. Maybe the pressure change, I’m not sure. Got one good shot and had a great cast, but the first strip hung up on a piece of grass. I enjoy getting out there and seeing them just as much as I do catching them these days.

Home for dinner, fresh trout and blue crabs. Yum!!

Got to go out with a good friend for the first trip on his new boat yesterday, and just enjoyed poling him around - I enjoy just watching the fish and tails as much as casting at them. He got about 7 shots with no takes (we are noobs). I didn’t even take a shot  Gonna try again tonight on my boat

OPT, let me know if you ever need a partner. I have found a few new spots I’ve never poled across and would love to try out in my neck of the woods. No pressure where I have been fishing, good stuff.

Will do 23. I think we have met once or twice in passing. Would like to get to know you a little better. My whaler floats in 6" so it can go skinny. And if I get stuck I just get out and drag it

Trolling motor gets me close enough to throw the fly most of the time and doesn’t spook the fish, but doesn’t like going through the thicker grass. Most of my spots are wadable, so if I get to the edge of the grass and a fish is out of reach or the wind is blowing makign it tough for a cast, I’ll get out. My next boat will be something to pole.

I’m going this afternoon if you wanna meet me around 5ish

I couldn’t resist and went back again this afternoon. Water was gorgeous, but a little high for my liking. The sun was hot and not much wind. Only thing missing was aggressively feeding fish. Spooked a bunch as they were lazy again today for me. I did manage one 25" on the spinning rod today on a plastic. They finally started to act a little better as the day got late and the water started dropping out. Only had one or two fish truly tail this afternoon.

Perhaps Friday will be better as the tide is closer to dusk. I guess I’ll just have to go and find out! I have a serious fishing problem.

Just saw this. Went out with BOSN and covered 3 known good flats and saw 0 tailing. Saw 2 cruising. Frustrating… So we pulled out the regular gear and caught a few. Really wanted to cast at some tails. Oh well …

Sounds like the chicken or the egg? You may need Bonzo and a paperclip to work it out.

PeaPod is selective in his fishing partners. 23, you and me don’t make the grade I guess
