Firece or Battle Penn Reel

I am soon to get a surf rod and was thinking of matching one of these in the 8000 model to a Penn Prevail 12ft rod and 50# Power Pro any opinions or suggestions would be nice, thanks.

I have two Battles & love them.

My Battles have been flawless - my Fierces have been worthless. Handles falling off - gear and threads stripping - paint falling off and corrosion starting ASAP. Battles - no isses. My 3000 is my goto inshore reel, gets 90% of casting action, needs a little TLC after 3 years. Cleaning and lube it should be ready to go…

1 Battle 2500 combo with 10lb braid, no problems, much better drag
1 Fierce 2500 combo with 10lb braid, no problems other than paint coming off
1 Fierce 4000 combo with 65lb braid, Handle pulls off and it doesnt spool the line correctly. Tends to load all the line at the top of the spool.
4 Persuit 4000 combo with 20lb braid, One of the Handles pulled off, paint coming off. otherwise have been good.
1 Battle 8000 combo with 30lb braid, much better drag and feels alot better in your hand.

I had problems with braid and the 4000 fierce. It wouldnt fill the spool correctly so all the line was pushed to the top of the spool. Never had this
problem with the Battles of Persuits. Tried different sized braid from 15 to 65 didnt make a difference.

The battle you can run braid right to the spool giving you more line capacity.
The price of the Battle has come down a little. WM has them on sale but I think most of the tackle shops beat WM anyways.

I’m with Yakman, go with the Spinfisher V or Conflict. I have both, love them! Will both hold up longer than certainly the Fierce (have one of those too), and possibly the Battle. For the surf though, I would definitely go with the Spinfisher V.

I have a Battle 3000 combo and would buy 5 more of them tomorrow if I could. The rod is good and the reel is great. In my opinion, I think it is probably pretty hard to beat at the price.

Battle all the way…I have three 7000’s that are two years old and still going strong. I promise i stress them more than any of you, and they are still in great shape! drags are smooth and the finish has not flaked at all.

My Penn Battle 2000 is only a year old and the bail spring already failed me.

I have a 4000 and a 5000 Firece and have not had one problem with them. The 5000 is mounted on a Peen Torgue rod and has seen many fish pulled up from the depths. Love them both. Just added a Battle 6000 combo to my collection. Cant wait to see how she works.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

I have used both and they are both great.

Spinfisher, Battle or Conflict. I have all three and are all solid. Nasty Dawg on this site is a representative and has won my business through great customer service.

Seems like most of the problems with the Fierce line is with the smaller ones. Maybe so, maybe not, just seems like that’s the case. I have a Fierce 6000 on a Star rod that is spooled with 50# power pro and no problems in 3 years. I mostly use it for jigging so it gets a workout whenever it comes out to play. Reel looks like new and is in great working order.
Also have a couple of Spinfisher 750SS reels that I bought used. Also spooled with braid. I let the “guests” use these when we are bottom fishing and they work flawlessly also. Drags on all three are real smooth, especially compared to some of the other reels I have.
I will say, I’m anal about cleaning and re-lubing my reels when I get home.

Glad I hadn’t had a few beers before reading that last line…

To the OP, I think any of the Penn reels mentioned will serve your purpose. I guess it comes down to budget. NastyDawg has been helpful to me too, shoot him a PM and he’ll point you in the right direction.

40" if you are looking for a dedicated surf reel a Spinfisher V 7500 is going to be your best option. This reel has a water tight design to keep water out the gear box and drag system.

New battle II is coming out soon if it already hasn’t. Same price point as the old model.

Nasty doesn’t the new battle have sealed bearings and drag?
