first 2 reds on the fly

Caught my first two on the fly. 23" and 24". I wish I had pictures but I don’t. I just got into this, and for Valentines Day my girlfriend bought me a cheap freshwater fly tying kit. Well I tried my hand at tying a minnow clouser with the help of YouTube and a legitimate one that I bought and tried to imitate, but failed miserably. I was a bit buzzed–that’s my excuse. But it was that awful fly, and I mean AWFUL fly, that caught my first two fish. My casting skills need a lot of practice but good lord is this fun. It’s warming up. The reds are biting. I have a new hobby. Spring training has started. Life ain’t bad.

Very, very nice! It’s all downhill from here.

Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.

“Throughout history, fly fishing has remained the peak of the angler’s art. Other weapons of attack on dwellers of lake and stream and ocean may come and go, but when a man has tried every one, if he is a philosopher at all, he will come back to the fly rod. No other method of fishing gives the angler the same pleasure.” -Joe Brooks

Did you tell your g’f that she just bought herself a lot of alone time. These things on the fly are addictive. But you can always blame it on her for getting you the kit to get started.

Good going,
Straight off the deep end…
Hope she understands.
He’s hooked.

Don’t get caught up with worrying about tying a “pretty” fly. Sometimes the raggededly looking ones work just as well or better. Presentation is more important, IMO

Lets give woman credit. Maybe she wants him gone more. Really start to worry if the “mail man” starts to bring more tying stuff.

Just kiddin. It is addictive. Wait until you get them up in the grass going nuts.

I was trying to explain this same thing to someone the other day. That quote sums it up beatifully!

the fly might not be pretty but its all about the reward you got out of catching a red on a fly you made yourself. practice makes perfect

“all this for a fish”

My fly tying is still pretty bad. I tied a few yesterday–I’d like to try them out today if this wind dies down a bit. But I’m continuing to get better with my casting and I’ve caught some fish. On a side note, I live 5 minutes away from both the Chas Angler and Haddrell’s, those folks have been wonderful and patient as hell with me and my new hobby. I make sure all my angling money goes to both of them. We’re lucky to have them.
