Finally I’ve decided to get out and figure out how to catch fish otf. After a lot of encouragement and help from some friends I got out to walk the flats this evening on the flood tide. It was a bit windy but I managed to walk around and throw my line for a few hours. I found 3 fish. It was really cool cause I’ve never seen a tailing red and it got in my blood quick! I got within 15 ft of 1 fish. The grass was thick and couldn’t get my line in through it. Got snagged just in front of the fish and ended up spooking him while trying to free my line. He was big though, probably 32in+. The other 2 I saw were perfect tails, but couldn’t get my line in the right spot in time. They seemed to be gone just as fast as I saw them.
I can’t wait to try again tomorrow. Not sure if I’m doing everything right, but eager to keep learning. Thanks to all those who have helped/encouraged me.
I really hope you land that first one. I am right there with ya buddy trying to land #1. My weeka schedule now revolves around tidal cycles…and this is with a goose egg in the catch column. Might be bad off when I actually catch one.
Haha, not litterally. My wife and toddler may have some say in,that. Free time revolves around tides lets say. There aint a lot of the time to spread around either lol.
If you saw that many on your first time Greg, count yourself lucky. But, I know where you live/launch from and I’m not surprised you saw tails! How’s your Whaler running?
Haha, thanks Optiker. I actually didn’t fish over there. I found a nice walk to flat so I can hop in the truck after work and easily squeeze in an hour or two of fishing without having to trailer the boat, launch, flush engine, clean boat, etc. Its nice to go boating and fishing out there, but i don’t always have the luxury of time.
I am excited to get out that way this weekend and try a couple flats i’ve been wanting to go to. You going to be out?
Haha, thanks Optiker. I actually didn’t fish over there.
Should be plenty o’ tails around there! Was out yesterday after work and scouted a new place closer to my side of town. Not much water, but will be going back when there is…
Post up a pic when you hoist your first grass-red OTF
