First bait fish

Tied up this guy tonight. Gotta get a tire put back on my boat trailer so I can try it out! Thanks again for the help Simon…

for redfish I would trim it back a bit… that big wide profile is fine for certain species… but you’ll get better results with a slimmer profile around here… just experience talking… something more like this…

the color pattern looks ok, but I would definately bring that thing down a notch…

Thanks for the tip Mike. I wasn’t sure how much it would slim down when it gets wet so I didn’t want to trim it down to much… But I will knock it down some more when I get home and maybe add a few marker stripes

the EP will slick back a bit… but not that much… That wide pattern you see is good if you’re trying to imitate a bunker, or bluegill (for bass) but since you want it to look more like a mullet or mud minnow I would try to get it to more of that shape… it looks good for your first one though… well tied…

Thanks man… I haven’t even cast to a fish yet. This is all a brand new style to me so we’ll see. I’ll get one in the boat eventually.

Both of those look fine to me… My flies look like crap in comparison…I can’t compete

Is this better?

Also what size hook do you typically tie your baitfish on? Your weed guard is hard mono? What’s the difference in that and regular mono… Stiffer? Don’t really have much to choose from for fly shops around here so sorry for the dumb questions.

Great job for your first fly!

I use gamakatsu SC-15 2/0. You should trim the bottom so the hook point is exposed. It will help prevent the fly from fouling…which happens frequently with the EP style flies. Carry a cheap comb with you when you fish.

I tie almost exclusively on the gamakatsu SC15 1/0. That profile looks much better but I’m with mudflat on exposing the hook more, it does help with the fouling…

As for the weedguard that’s 50# flouro. It’s what I had laying around, but 50# hard mono is just fine, you want hard mono because its much stiffer and works better to keep your hook clear.
