Nice job on your first blue one!
But legal or not. That’s a big beast with a sword on the end of his face. If he decided to get back in the water before you were ready, you could have been in big trouble.
Thanks guys for the info. I do know the laws now on a Blue Marlin, i have never paid attention to the billfish laws because i never thought i would ever land anything like this. But now i know there is a chance that small boats can also be a part of the BIG water fish. Sorry i upset so many of you. Good luck out there!!
Cool deal! Congrats on your first! Ignore the idiots on here who are sexual intellectuals and have something negative to say. We all aren’t as great as they are. You could’ve killed the fish but you only took pics. But hey at least you made them happy because the got to show off their grand knowledge and critique someone else. We caught our first sail this past weekend and by the sound of my voice on the video I’d say I was excited to. Congrats again, the first only happens once.

Congrats fast dog on the sail!!!
question: is the bill smooth? does it have any texture to it?

Anyway, you said, “you could have killed the fish, but only took pics”… How do you know that the fish isn’t floating up dead right now? I mean come on, it’s a 250+lb fish that was drug in by his nose. That’s got to be great for him. Not to mention that he has 250lbs of pressure pushing his slime coat against the non-skid deck as it is scraped off. The fish is stressed to the point where it’s not even moving and “posing” for pictures, before it’s dumped back in the water and “swam away”. Do you honestly think that the fish is in a healthy condition? Just because a fish “swam away” doesn’t mean it survived. If you believe that, then it’s a pretty “a-sexual, non-intellectual” point of view…
Let’s be honest here. There is a > 50% chance that the fish is dead. Maybe he should have been kept. That way he could have been thrown into a dumpster instead.

Skinneej you are 100% correct ,pat yourself on the back. I am non intellectual on this stuff. I’m new to this just as he was with the Blue. He made a mistake and he knows it. The first couple posters told him so. No need for everyone to be a smatazz to him. All of us were not born near the coast or with family that has salt in their veins. This is a great site for me to learn, sorry our lack of knowledge pisses you guys off so bad. I’m sure you never made a mistake ,asked a dumb question, got excited over a fish or anything like that. You said I need to get laid, well I agree with you on that also. Dang there’s two things we agree on. We are gonna be buddies before you know it! hopefully the fish ain’t dead but if he is something else got a meal so the circle of life goes on. I’m sure more than a few die after a long fight or are attacked by a predator while hooked up. Enjoy your fishing and remember those non intellectual in need of being laid non fish catching dummies like me are learning so as to someday not get under you skin.

Nice fish. Hopefully it survived to fight another day. And to the few that posted about cutting this fella some slack, welcome to a public forum. If you post pics of marlin drying out on the deck of a boat, a box full of 60 peanut dolphin, button bucks and jake turkeys, be prepared for a little “constructive criticism”. Thats how this **** works. You create your own hard time sometimes when you try and brag on the net.

Well said
Any man that doesn’t know how to catch a fish, shouldn’t disgrace a fish, by catching it.

Fishing is full of smart asses. It’s best that everyone just get used to it. It’s a bunch of dudes on a boat drinking alcohol, not your Sunday school class having a fruit punch and ice cream party.
And PS, YES, we have all made mistakes. But we either learned the hard way or someone told us about it. The difference is we didn’t get our feelings hurt and pitch a tantrum. It’s just business…

Of The Hook, dont let these people worry you, I caught a blue and a white in the same day last year and they gave me hell because of the way I released them. Both fish swam off just fine. these people on here can not stand to see anybody catch a bill fish. they just cant take it. there just jelious and pissed off because they cant catch one. Take a bat to the next one and hang him HIGH. good job.

Yep, sure enough. But a man can’t help what he doesn’t know. It’s our job to help educate without being too critical. There was a time when none of us knew anything, we all had to learn too, and somebody probably taught us. The man admitted his mistake and owned it, and I bet he’ll never do it again. Or if he does, he won’t post a picture of it Adrenaline can sometimes cloud good judgement in an unexpected event.
There are really 2 issues here, one is the well being of the fish, very important, but a bigger issue is the safety of the crew. That fish could have torn that boat apart, and everyone in it. Safety first!
That’s a dang nice fish, OTH:sunglasses: Congrats!

Dont bash a man who just met a lifetime achievement. He was just as excited as everyone else when they caught there first bill, shot there first buck, got laid the first time. Not everyone is as perfect as the bashers on this forum. Who wouldnt want a great picture. That fish has as much chance of survival as the red snapper you pulled up from 100’ with its stomach coming out of its mouth. Who really knows if they survive. Its part of the game. Nice fish Brad. Wish I could have been there.

Most of them don’t. I was fishing in the Gulf recently and we were catching a ton of short grouper, I mean 1" short. There were 2 barracuda parked under the boat eating every fish we released. We probably fed the cudas 60 shorts. They were acting strange that day and would not hit the fish while reeling it up, they would wait until we handled it carefully, unhooked it with our government required de-hooker, vented it’s swim bladder with the government required venting tool, pumped some water over it’s gills, and released it swimming, then they would nail it. Every dang one of them.
That didn’t seem right, so we started putting all the shorts in the live well, and filled up the 50 gallon tank with short grouper. Then we took them to another good spot a couple of miles away and released them all before the cudas and sharks got on to us again. It seemed like the right thing to do, but if we had got stopped by the fish police with 50 short grouper in the well, we probably would have gone to jail.
We do the best we can and learn from our mistakes. In Mexico they would have ate that Marlin, and that Marlin can be in Mexico in 3 days.

Capt Larry, surely you aren’t that gullible. You honestly believe that there is ANYONE on this forum that doesn’t know dragging a marlin into the boat is a bad idea? Seriously?Oh wait, I am talking to the guy who caught 110 short grouper on the same spot and didn’t think to pick up and move elsewhere…
Bottom line, EVERYONE knows that you leave a blue marlin in the water. There are just those that give a ■■■■■ and those that don’t. I’m not stupid enough to believe that this is just a “rookie mistake”. Don’t be so (**() dumb people.
