Skinnej, you are just wrong on thinking EVERYONE knows that! There are tons of people that don’t even read the offshore forums only to 'Pick" their day and try to push out to get some dolphin or kings etc only to have a sail hooked. That person very well may know nothing about the billfish laws since they weren’t trying to catch one. Don’t you agree? off the hook only has 12 posts so he is obviously new here! I have been fishing here for almost 40 years (mainly inshore and nearshore) but have had my share of offshore days and I wish I absorbed the all knowing knowledge of fising and fishing regulations that many of you seem to posess! Maybe one day!

I’m getting quite the education. Still hoping for some to chime in with actual pointers to help out. All of this negativity is not my thing.
Enough already let it go… If yall want to have a pissing match do it through a PM or trade phone numbers. The OP spoke his peace so quit hijacking his thread.

Capt Larry, surely you aren't that gullible. You honestly believe that there is ANYONE on this forum that doesn't know dragging a marlin into the boat is a bad idea? Seriously?
Yep, I reckon they ain’t all as smart as you.

Oh wait, I am talking to the guy who caught 110 short grouper on the same spot and didn't think to pick up and move elsewhere...
What the heck is your problem? I wasn’t the captain of the boat, nor did I make the rules. We did get 18 keepers, and we did save all the shorts we could. Next time I’ll get him to call you to ask what he should do and when he should move? I’m sure you’ll know the answer.

That fish is a STUD.

Again. Serious question. Having never caught one i am curious about the texture of the bill
If that blue didn’t make it,it was likely eaten by a lg shark.IMO lg sharks are more stressed than billfish off our coast. If you want to reely protect billfish, get rid of billfish tourneys. No telling how many die from the Big Rock alone.Yet,if I take my 12yr old nephew slow trolling in 70ft and he catches his first sail on my 21 bayboat,we can’t pull it out for a once in a lifetime pic…legaly.

It is very rough, like coarse sandpaper.

Dang! I missed all of this bs and armchair quarterbacking! Oh wait, that’s because I was fishing and not trying to police the internet!
Off the hook, great job on the blue and don’t let these keyboard experts take the joy of this special experience away from you!

Total or lower jaw? What was the girth?

Dont bash a man who just met a lifetime achievement. He was just as excited as everyone else when they caught there first bill, shot there first buck, got laid the first time. Not everyone is as perfect as the bashers on this forum. Who wouldnt want a great picture. That fish has as much chance of survival as the red snapper you pulled up from 100’ with its stomach coming out of its mouth. Who really knows if they survive. Its part of the game. Nice fish Brad. Wish I could have been there.
NautWorkin,
When you kill your first Buck are their laws. When you get laid the first time, you don’t go find a prostitute because it’s against the law so when you catch your first Billfish there are laws. DNR, The Feds, nor the Police care. They are going to arrest you or write you a ticket.
He should be bashed for being ignorant to the law weather he is fishing for Billfish or not.
ITS THE LAW KNOW THE LAW!!!
Nice catch! While I don’t see the need to pull that fish into the boat, the biggest mistake made was telling people and posting the pic. Could have said you killed it and smoked it…and been legal but you would’ve been bashed just as bad by the die hard billfish lovers.
All of the posters that are fired up about the law - do you ever drive a mile an hour over the speed limit? If so, you are breaking the law. Albeit - you don’t go online and post a pic of your speedometer pegged at 120 mph going down the interstate either!
That said, I’ve never caught a marlin and do not target them because our tackle is not adequate - I personally would not want to burn up 2 hours fighting one when we could be putting meat in the boat. If I had a chair and 80’s or 130’s I might try to get one though.
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
I have another serious question: It’s painfully clear that the fish should’ve been kept in the water; hindsight’s always 20/20. Since that didn’t happen, what’s then the best way to resolve this situation? Is it better to keep the fish and eat it, or should you take a chance and attempt to revive and release the fish, hoping that it survives?
Oh, and by the way, congratulations, OTH…
Revive and release, but that’s my opinion only. It might make it, it might not, but nothing goes to waste in the ocean. It’s chances are better than 50/50.
