Look, the guy made a mistake and people pointed it out to him. I would assume the majority of the “congratulations, fish of a lifetime, nice job” people are the people who have never caught billfish or a number of billfish. If you are using the natural resources we have, I think it is the responsible thing to do to learn how to use the properly. Meaning, don’t go pull a blue marlin in the boat for your personal pleasure when it’s terrible for the fish because you want a picture. The same thing applies to redfish. Don’t hoist a 35 lb red by a boga. Often times it destroys their jaw and they die because they cannot feed properly anymore.
The guy made a mistake and it was pointed out to him. It is not a holier than thou attitude by those pointing it out. It is a “you are out there and you did something really stupid.” If you are an offshore fisherman, you know this. If not, you need to learn, that is not how you properly handle a fish. No one is being mean, it is just the truth to protect the fishery that a lot of people love.
And for BigTuna, in general release terms, on smaller sailfish that are going nuts, it is best to pop the leader and let the fish swim away without damaging itself on the boat. Usually you can get them in pretty quick and they are still relatively green and going wild so if you pop them off you have an official release and also a healthy fish.
For the bigger fish like this that are stressed, I recommend you either youtube some videos or read some articles but the general quick way to do it is to have a wireman pull the fish along side the boat and asses its health. Often times these fish are very lethargic at the boat because they are extremely tired from the fight. Then, straighten the fish out so it is mimicking swimming and pull it by it’s bill alongside the boat to get water flowing over its gills again. That is how a fish breaths and often times you can see the fish’s color get better once you do this and it will start slowing twitching it’s tale and swimming along side. Once it

Since he was planing on releasing the fish it was a mistake, one i have been guilty of before too when a friend who begged for a picture of his first sailfish. Not trying to be holier than thou nor do I think I’m a better fisherman by saying that, but it needed pointed out, as it was by others, for the new guys that if your not going to keep a billfish you should not put it in the boat. not going to hit on the law thing as I break laws all the time, its about giving the fish the best chance for survival so we can protect the fishery for our kids.
