First Blue Of The Season

Unfortunately, it was the species normally caught off the beaches of North Carolina…
Well, Mid Level managed to get its second trip of the season on Friday as the work/weather/wimp formula all came together for an open day. Did a self imposed driveway tutorial of the new Garmin 4210 unit earlier in the week, so there was no buffoonery by the captain on this trip. Pulled away from the Cut at 3:45 with a crew of 4. Clear skies, 3/4 moon & flat seas & had a great ride out until the last 8 miles or so where it got a little bumpy–started fishing in 185’. Still having trouble with my temp gauge–last week we fished in 150-190 degree water–this week it cooled down to 100-120 degrees–oh well-will try & fix that over the weekend.
First couple of fish were peanuts, but one of crew is having a fry so in the box they went. A little later, some of the big boys came rolling past us headed to deeper water, but we were catching an occasional mahi which kept us the in the same general area. 2 hours later, they came rolling back in. That’s when we caught our Blue…fish. I guess he got lost–always thought they stayed closer to shore but Brian now has a little variety for the fry. Saw a lot more life than last week–more flyers–more rips–more weeds–but no patches–just scattered. Also saw a marlin splash which magically transformed itself into a mola mola when we got closer. Fished between 190-350 ft, with most fish caught around 230-290ft. Picked up around 2:45 & back to the Cut at dead low tide. The insane asylum was having a field trip and gave all its patients boats & trailers for the day–looked like the first Saturday in May.
Ended up bringing home 12 mahi–largest went 33, 22, 19. Will send out Brians address for the fish fry a little later…

Congrats on your bluefish. Haha.
