First Cobia trip of the season

Looked at the weather reports, low 80’s, winds to 10 MPH. Decided to head to Elliot’s Beach and fish the rips at Parris Island for some Cobia action…

Arrive at the landing, and the wind is over 20 with white caps on the Broad River…

Start to drive home, depressed that the wind was too strong, and I wouldn’ be catching any Cobia today.

On the way home, noiced the wind not afecting Third Batalion Ponds, so, instead of doin “Honey-Does”, I launched the Yak and immediatly ran into a huge school of tailing Reds.

Went to the old faithful lure, Electric Chicken Jig… no luck… Tried several other lure combinations, no luck, and dredging up lots of weeds on every cast… ARGH…

Then I put on a soft bait with a large spoon lip, and voila a nice 16" Trout. Another 1/2 hour with this, and nothing, all the while the water is boiling with activity around me…

Frustrated, I tied a large hook onto my line and attached an Electric Buzzard softbait to the hook, and put split shot above the eyelet.

Voila, the magic combination, I soon has a nice 17" red and another 16" seatrout in my tankwell…

Tonight, I am eating some frsh fish…

Tomorrow, I am looking for some large hook jig heads with light weight heads… 1/16th Oz or 1/32 oz.

Any suggestions?

Hey YotF

I don’t go out without a bag of frozen finger mullet. Seems to work on the Reds for me, cut them in half (heads & tails) with a 3/0 circle hook.

I’m thinking about breaking out my 20 pound trolling spinners and join you guys for the cobia run in May. I’m in Charleston, I’d like to run down there one weekend (without the kayak) just to check out the landings there, scout out somes hotels before the actual fishing trip.

quit being so cheap and buy some minners:smiley:

Hey Cut

I’ve been tossin’ out a “Redfish-Buffet”…Live Shimps…Mud-minners…and real dead finger mullets…the mullet (like my hair cut) have been gettin’ the job done!!!

…OK, give “Yak” a break". The “Third Battion Pond” is Ruff. A few years ago the “Spanish Fly” did a show there. However, at the time he did catch his personel best “RedFish”. Last week a guy caught a 55# Black Drum there.
We were goin’ Cobia fishin’. I hadn’t even brought a light rod & reel. Yak did, but not bait. Shoot,I just paddled around, While Yak was “reelin” 'em in. And we won’t mention the “Kayak” rescue (Thanks Yak, I’ll make sure it’s well beached from now on)

Where is this pond? I don’t think that I’ve heard of it.

Thats why they call it fishing, not catching

Mornin’;
“Third Battlion Pond”, is located on MCRD Parris Island. It has a No Motor Rule, as well as a Bald Eagle Safe Area. It is basically a water containmnet pond. It is fed/drained by several pipes which connect it to Ribbon Creek. Ribbon Creek is a Tidal Creek, which runs behind the rifle range, and connects to Broad River. Since Third Battion Pond sets higher then Ribbon Creek, the Pond pretty much keeps a constant level. Most of the Pond is 4-6’ deep, and the shores are just like “flats” (6-8" deep, no problem for a yak). When the Tide is around +8’, water from Ribbon Creek rushes into the Pond. As the tide recedes, any fishes, crabs, shrimp… that traveled into the Pond become land locked, until the next 8’ Tide. It is a very unique fishin’ spot. While out with Yak on the Fly yesterday, I was sneaking up on what I thought was a Shark. Dorsal fin completely out of the water. I got to within 10’, water depth was 1’ deep. I saw that it was a Bull RedFish, and not a shark. It was easily over 36", and is stuck until the next Hi Tide.

Even then, they usually stay put… and get bigger and bigger.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!
