First crab

Looks pretty good I think for a starter crab… Next one I might add some mono eyes

Very nice and clean… the only thing I would add is like 4 strands of flash under the tail so as the marabou moves it twinkles through…

That sounds like a good idea… Caught hell with the weed guard. I’m sure it will get easier as I do a few more.

What do you use for your weed guard?

Also, I see a lot of patterns that use the “V” style weed guard…does this style work better than attaching attaching the weed guard to the bend of the hook and the eye of the hook?

I just started tying myself… That’s the first weedguard I ever tied in so can’t answer your questions on which style works better. I used regular 40# mono but hard mono is what you should use because its stiffer. Regular mono was all I had laying around and I’m learning so I didn’t think it was a big deal for the experiment. I’m sure some of the guys that know more than me will chime in and answer your questions

for weed guards It depends on the shape/length/gap of your hook for your weed guard… Some work better than others for some hooks and are too short for some… experiment and see what gives you the best result for the hook. I like the loop guard on shorter crab patterns but for longer, wider hooks I like a V or the wrap around. Just remember there is no such thing as a weed"less" fly… some are just more weed Resistant
