First day fishing the kayak...disappointing

Well got everything packed up and heading to cherry grove with my brother and brother in-law for our first kayak fishing experience. I was using my flyrod while they used spinning tackle. 7 hours on the creeks and zero fish. I got a couple of strikes but nothing to brag about. I really didnt see any fish. Lots of finger mullet, shrimp, blue crabs, and the occasional flying mullet, but no spot taila. Now I know they dont tail in my area so I am not sure what I am looking for. I was casting along the grass line and oyster bars just blind casting. What exactly am I supposed to see in the way of sight casting an area that doesnt have tailers? Any input would be awesome.

If the water is so deep that the fishes body won't influence the surface of the water, you should use the bait as indicators. Crabs, mullet and shrimp like to stay in the water unless they are concerned about being eaten. Mullet will swim in a straight line unless something tries to eat them. Shrimp stay underwater unless something is trying to eat them.

Also, because bait is always in threat of being eaten, they are constantly looking for places to hide. They want to hide up little feeder creeks so… fish the mouth of feeder creeks. They can hide on tops of oyster rakes so… so… (guess the answer yet?) Fish next to oyster rakes.

A buddy of mine knows that if I say “rain bait” I am now on the hunt for trout. If trout are underneath a school of minnows, the minnows will all start jumping out of the water and look like little rain drops. I love trout under “rain bait”.

You are out there. Enjoy it! And you will get as much help as you need. But, I won’t take you fishing. I like guys who teach themselves to fish. I have buddies who are “guides” if you just want to cat

Thanks for all the help. I really did emjoy being out there fish or not. I was doing just like you said, casting into disturbed bait, oyster rakes, and so forth. Guess it just wasnt my day. Dont want fish handed to me, just needed some reassurance that I was in the right track. I will be out there at it again asap, learning “on the fly”. Thanks again.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Cool. It is easy to get the feeling that everyone is catching fish when you look at fishing forums. They aren’t.
