Headed offshore for a bottom fishing trip with Sellsfish, Gotchacovered, Duckcommander, and Ron (You can check out the offshore reports for more on that). At our first stop, about four Peanut dolphin swim up and I grab my fly rod. I made the proper cast, and the fish were trying to grab it but the hook up just would not occur. The other guys in the boat were able to pick the school off with spinning gear and it was back to bottom fishing. In case I got another shot, I decided to change from the store bought fly that I was using to a small squid pattern I had tied weeks before. On our way to a new set of numbers, someone spotted a small board floating and we decided to check it out. First cast with the squid pattern around the board and a whole school of about 9 Peanuts show up and charge the fly. The first fish inhaled the fly and with a quick stripstrike the fight was on. He fought valiantly, with 3 good jumps of 8 to 9 feet before I landed him. I followed it up with another shortly after. It was a rush and I cannot wait to hook into a big boy.
