First Fish OTF*

So I finally know what it feels like to fight a fish with the fly rod. Went out with my my wife’s dad and brother and got on the spadefish pretty well. I had some flies tied up (thanks to Josh at CA), but unfortunately the fish would not take them. Actually had two or three swim right up to it, stop, and turn away. I had as much as I could stand (the others had already put three or four in the boat), so I tied on a normal hook, threw on a hunk of jelly, and dropped it down.

Didn’t take long for a hook-up, a good fight, and a 4 lb. spadefish in the boat. I switched back to the fly to try it some more, but no luck. I made some mods to the original design and hope I’m able to get out there and try them tomorrow. Maybe then I can hopefully take the (*) away from this statistic.

Had a great day nonetheless, and will be enjoying some wonderful fried spadefish, grits, and sliced tomatoes for dinner.

Congrats. No worries, IMO that is what makes this sport so much more fun than spin casting. Tying a pattern and tweaking it till you get it right. Earlier this week I was fishing some dock lights and saw fish crashing the surface everywhere, but I only managed to hook up with one nice trout, even after I put every pattern I could think of in the strike zone. I examined his stomach and he was gorging himself on silversides. The next day I tied up some super small surf candies with all the attributes of a silverside and it was all pull last night! Keep at it and you will be super happy with the reward. If you need some help tweaking the pattern, give me shout and I will see if I can help you out.
