First fly's

Here are my first attempts at tying. Thanks to nikonjedi for giving me a crash course at Charleston Angler Summerville today.

My first - clouser. I know, its pretty fugly

My second - a deceiver. I’m pretty excited about this one

Both will get wet this weekend, hopefully one will get bit too!

Hmmmmmm… strong in the ways of the force is this one… keep tying and soon… soon you too will become a Jedi… Good Job Brother… keep at it and don;t be afraid to try anything new. If you see a pattern you like, tie it. Sometimes it takes ya a little bit to figge rout how to put it together but that is half the fun.

I strongly agree with Capt. Newman.

My first clousers were all tied with way too much material. Yours look great… especially for winter. Bait is always skinner in winter.

Speaking of bait, I usually try to tie most flies with a darker back than the belly. Like your deceiver. Not sure if the fish care but, it seems like most bait have darker backs than bellies and it gets transfered to the flies I tie. Your clouser may have this flipped. But, prove my personal superstition wrong and hook up a red on that thing!

You might find that catching a fish on a fly that you tied is even more exciting than catching your first fish on the fly rod was. At least it was for me. Best of luck.

Thanks for the tips iFly. Yeah, I realized that after thinking about how it would ride in the water with the dumbbell eyes. My intention was to go dark/light as you said.
Last night I tied a version of the deceiver with a weed guard and it turned out pretty good. My thought was that if I drag it real slow over oysters that the guard will keep it from hanging up. We’ll see…

That’s bad! And of course by bad… I mean good.

Good thing you had the colors oriented the right way.

Thats the only fly I tried today. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! It looked real good in the water, and without weight, it landed really soft and sank slow - it was a hit with them reds

Tie that fly ever thicker and with bucktail and it will sink even slower. Nice job!
