First Offshore Trip of the Season

Got offshore today in the Jerni-A-Gan for the first time this season with some friends from work Will Reese (this was a bachelor’s party trip for him) his brothers Joe and John, Jim McGowan, Scott Brantley and Matt Deufel. They showed at the marina this morning at 5 am after reportedly only having left the Dockside at 2 am.

We cleared the corner and were running by 5:30. Got the high speed gear in the water at 6:53am and got hit by an AJ before we could even get the second lure set in 85ft. Ran the rest of the way with no other hook ups high speeding.

Ran well past the ledge looking for a temperature break or rip and finally put the trolling gear in at 220ft. Stayed pretty busy the rest of the morning with 2 dolphin at 9:24 in 300ft, another dolphin at 10:08, a Skipjack at 10:27, dolphin at 10:43, dolphin at 11:03, dolphin at 11:09 and then a clean release on a sailfish at 11:25. Couldn’t find anything until the last fish of the day with a small blackfin tuna at 2:00pm. Picked up everything on scattered weeds and temperature breaks between 300ft and 550ft near the 226 Hole with the rest of the Saturday flotilla. Worked out to 800ft but found nothing but clean blue water.

Weeds were scattered all over the place and just beginning to form lines and mats by late afternoon. With a calm sea tonight, tomorrow they should look good and won’t keep the cockpit so busy clearing lines. Biggest dolphin was 22lbs and smallest was a peanut. Blackfin was 15lbs.
