i did it. finally got mr red on a piece of fur and it was a jumbo. 31 inches conservatively. i measured against the rod and it came almost to the thread on the first guide which i later checked at 32 in. we havent gotten many of those since 4 summers back when they were thick for a couple months.
did hardly anything right. i had miscast and bowtied the line several times with buck fever so i just gave up and moved to an open area to practice casting. then several tails moved in so i had to get on it. i tried several presentations with my “crab thing” but no interest. at least a few were decent looks. it was getting dark so i went wabbit. it was some bead head thing with some schlappen and flash tied MM style sorta with a zonker tail. first good cast and wham an explosion 25 feet out. i tried to remember to strip strike and i did get my hand on the line but the first thing i noticed was the reel handle chewing up the sleeve of my frog togg. i managed to get the handle and lift the rod and he was already well into the backing and plowing toward the oysters. i tightened up the drag as much as i could stand and started backing up the hill surf fishing style. i got him turned at the last grass line and the fight declined from there with a couple of decent secondary runs. it was about dark and i started to cast again but remembered the rattler next to the ditch last week so i started back. he was as tired as i and just sitting there 20 feet from where i let him go. i caught him again, this time barehanded by the tail and worked him til he pulled away and went on out. i would have laid down with him if i could. my arm hurt so good for two days. went to PI outdoors asking for Ben Gay and a sling and milked it to the max. i cant decide whether to wash the slimy, stained, blue shirt or send it to the Smithsonian to go next to the stained blue dress. i feel it was at least equally important.
I guess it wont ever get any better but i want to do it again. Thanks to all yall for helping me stick with the ques
Congrats Hutch - I just recently got my first tailer, so that feeling is still fresh with me, too.
I’m heading up to Garden City for a week, starting on June 21. If you plan to chase some tails and need a wading partner, let me know. My 8 weight will be in tow and it looks like the tides will be right.
great job.

Hutch,
You is da man…
BTW you have made me a little more careful tromping around hammocks after seeing Mr. Noshoulders with you.
yeah weve got a herpetologist at the lab this week looking for various species. he likes that area for canebrakes. he thinks the pygmies may have disappeared. i dont remember seeing one in a while. looks like all of the good tides end up right at dark so i plan to start taking a light. dont want to hurt ones back.:)>

Congrats Pawleys! Makes you wonder why you would ever pay to go somewhere else when you can do that in your own back yard .
