Been reading here for the last year–since i began fishing regularly around Chas. Number of years ago I fished the laguna madre in Texas when I lived out that way for a bit. Caught plenty of trout, but became hooked on redfishing–though i never managed to catch a redfish. last may i got my first in Chas–out of the kayak. learned quick that big bait = big fish with these guys. That day, first four broke off 10lb line after a few minutes into each fight. down to last peeler chunk and circle hook, backed way down on the drag, kept the tip high to clear oyster beds, and worked in a hoss. rinsed and repeated throughout the summer.
In the fall, from what i learned on here, began stalking flats for tailers. bought a fly rod and had LCF shop rig me up. many days of stalking, not knowing exactly what i was looking for, paid off when i saw my first tail flopping around in some glasswort as i was about to turn in. got a nibble but couldn’t set the hook. walked up 35 yards thinking i spooked him; to my surprise, i got right on top of him, watching him from directly above for a long fifteen seconds as he rooted then scooted. paralyzing.
in the winter, again from what i read on here, worked on a mud flat with the fly rod at a number of low tides. saw plenty, but learned the rub is seeing the fish well before they see you. Very difficult, even when standing in the kayak. Conditions are critical for this type of sightfishing. Suspecting helpfulness of elevation can’t be overstated.
Although ive been blanked on the fly rod so far, determination is strong, and i cant wait to work a curled over nine foot fly rod soon.
At any rate, i’m selling my OK so i can move to something a little bigger—need to get bother in law or niece on occasionally. Figured i’d share a few pics showing the enjoyment ive had of fishing with my first kayak and give thanks for people’s contributions.
