First red for charlie

Took the neighbors kid out on the kayak and caught his first red on a gold spoon in 6 inches of water and very light tackle.
Now that’s fun!

Wow! One heck of a first yak fish!

Nice! I’m guessing that spottail wasn’t the only thing HOOKED on that trip.

You bet. The kid was out of his mind excited and after taking about 50 pictures he made me promise to take him again. I’ve taken my own kids out fishing on a 23 ft boat to learn how to fish but learning in a kayak is really the best way to go. Tight quarters mandates good rod handling skills and there’s something very intimate about fishing at water level. As any one who has fished from a kayak knows it gives the best feel for the marsh, water, mud, current, tides etc… that’s what will make them good fisherman long term.
Same argument for using artificial. To see someone catch their first red by fooling it with a painted piece of metal jiggling along the bottom is priceless.

Nice, that’s a big redfish. After a fight like that, I’m sure he’s hooked for life.

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

nice fish how long was he?

Very close to the top of the slot.

Good answer! Good job on getting the kid on a nice red and teaching him to be a good sportsman by keeping only what is legal.

Kudos to you for taking a kid fishing and getting him hooked on a wholesome activity. Your other responsibility is educating conservation and explaining why we have the saltwater rules in place that we do and what it has done for the rebound of the species over the last 20 years.

Thanks for taking a kid fishing!

You are lecturing to the wrong guy.The fish is in the slot.Looks big from the photo but hes a small kid for reference.Like I said it was close but I have a mark on the cooler for trout and reds. Cant tell you what the exact length is because I dont know.Maybe 23? Like I said, real close.

Awesome, great deal teaching the next generation.

Thanks,

Ten of these bad boys Sunday. All but three 30" and up. Might try a fly rod this weekend. Bet that would be fun.
