First Red on the Ashley

Went out Saturday on the Ashley in my yak, was breezy but manageable at first. Got to creek mouth and wind picked up something fierce, had to push the tail of my yak into the tall grass to hold a spot but my efforts were rewarded with a nice 19 1/2 inch Red caught on a voodoo shrimp under a popping cork.

Very nice. The Ashley is a tough place to figure out. I haven’t so far. Isn’t that a tag in the belly?

It was a SCDNR tagged fish. I nearly put him back but being the first slot Red for me this year I gave him the place of honor at my dinner table. I did report tag to the DNR to help further their research.

Yea ive fished the Ashley a few times this year and its been tough. Had some strikes one day but didnt hook up. Nice fish

I don’t fish the Ashley enough anymore to find the fish but reds are definitely there and lots of people don’t know that river is full of Stripers. I used to tear the small striper up in there on top water plugs when I was a teenager. They are still there, in fact DNR stocks fingerlings in that river now.

Yea counterstrike, when we used to catch the striper in there it was above Ashboro. They were only a pound or two but a blast to catch on top water.

Wind in a kayak is brutal. I can deal with the heat, cold, rain, even getting skunked, but when you throw wind in there, it is tough to fish. I finally got a Stick Pin and take it with me always. Its nice to be able to anchor yourself and fish a dock without blowing around the creek. Good job. Nice red.

Yeah a stick pin is something that I need to get soon, I used one once on a rental and liked it, Saturday though was brutal, even a stick pin would have been challenged to hold me in place. When I launched it took me only 15 minutes to get to the creek mouth and once the winds picked up it took me over an hour of hard paddling to get back!

The striper are all but gone. The stocking efforts have shown that they seem to stay around for 2 yrs then they are mysteriously gone. It’s been over 2 years since last stocking and… gone - Unfortunately!

^^^That’s a shame. Only been a few years ago I saw DNR there releasing fingerlings. There was even an article in one of the magazine’s about the program in the Ashley. They were releasing a LOT with high hopes of restarting the resident population, said they had some fish caught that were not released indicating they were breeding. ( by DNA from scale test ) They must have hit a brick wall and gave up.
