Got to go out shad fishing for a few hours today…I had a bit of a pedal upstream, so I whipped the camera out and enjoyed the scenery:

This is what I came for…

I had a bunch of hits and hookups…This was the biggest one of the day. I actually had a few straighten the hook out (I was using thin-wire crappie jigheads with the smaller bronze hooks - I’ll beef up next time for sure) and I lost a very nice one at the kayak.

Nice I was thinking small bait fish. Shurley that’s not the same shad I was thinking about. Do you eat them or just a big bait fish
I don’t keep any - they are just fun to catch…especially on light tackle.
Shad are known as “poor man’s tarpon”

Well done elgeebee. Good to see them up there!

How was the current going up stream?
Man it can be flowing awful fast - faster than a 7ft outgoing tide
Someone said you can find water release times on the web somewhere?

You can call 1-800-925-2537 to get the discharge times. They have been running 24 hours lately.
I took the Pro Angler up there - the trip upstream wasn’t too bad, but I did stay along the edges where the current wasn’t ripping too bad.
For the kayaker, the current is a concern plus the boat traffic. Leave the anchoring in the middle to the bigger boats and stick to the sides along the bank. Be careful with anchoring in the current - you can end up sideways on anchor and you’ll be in a dangerous situation, with an unstable kayak.
Fishguy: I just landed a few - I lost much more than I caught. It is still early but they are out there.
Also something to think about, for the kayakers - those pelicans are very bold. They will come right up to your boat when you are catching them. They weren’t too bad today, but when the fish really start stacking-up in there - it is on! Makes me think of the video with Drew Gregory vs. The Goose

You said poor mans tarpon that’s what we call lady fish in beaufort. the one you caught looks like a lady fish just fatter than the ones I’ve caught. So is shad another name for lady fish?

No, I don’t think they are related at all. The shad are a schooling baitfish, not unlike threadfin and gizzard shad… just far bigger, and they are active feeders that can be caught on hook.
You can also catch blueback herring on a hook (small gold ones, or sabiki rigs) around this time of year and further into spring. Not sure if the herring have shown up there or not.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
Do you eat them or are they just a “catching” fish?
Oops, just saw the post about a recipe for baking them. Answers my question.

Love to catch a few. Spent many hours wading and tossing a “shad dart”
on the Delaware. Can someone PM the launch spot ?

I always thought of shad (and ladyfish too) as something fun to catch, like a tarpon. The freshwater guys I know call them “poor man’s tarpon” like the salt guys refer to ladyfish in the same manner.
Different types of fish, though…but both can make the rods double-over and fight like much bigger fish.

Saw you up there Friday. I was in the yellow Pathfinder. That was my first trip, and we had a blast. Will definitely go again.
Hey
lets plan a trip up to the dam
