twist and shout… yes my finger tips are bloody those ends are sergically sharp lol…
but on toppic… these are my first 2 haywire twists… looking for advice and possibly critique my current ones…
titanium#8 .22 single strand
du-bro ez twist haywire twist tool
random 9/0 2x circle hooks.
things ive noticed…
the first twist and barrel wrap are the hardest… both seem to require the hook be locked in place.
getting the first barrel wrap is a pita…i cant seem to get it any tighter on the end of the twist… once i get it at the 90deg and get it started its easy to continue… its hard to hold constant tension hence you see a hairline gap mid way thru… my very first barrel wrap i had to throw away as the barrel wraps overlapped somehow…
i was given the tip to keep pressure forward while doing the first set of twists…
well pick away or throw me some tips… idea use is live bait at the jetties and sharks…

Well, it’s a start and sharks aint real particular, but those first 5 wraps should be a lot tighter and closer together. The barrel wrap looks fine but the whole thing should be about 1/3 of that total length. The entire wrap shouldn’t take much over an inch in length.

both measure in at 2 1/4 inches from hook to last barrel wrap… give or take 1/4 inch from hook to first twist…
any tips how i can get the twists any tighter? i have tried holding hook and applying forward pressure… but dont want to force the twists on top of each other…
would those 2 fail under pressure or do they look good enough to fish(again shark) i will try making a few more tommorow and attempt to get them tighter.
Practice practice practice. That’s what’s gonna yield results

Ditto... And you probably don't need more than 5 barrel wraps... That being said... I hate single strand wire. If you are fishing for "shaaakks", why not just use a light cable where you can crimp instead of twist?

i have coated cable but its for bigger sharks… its 400+lb and its just to bulky i tried it at the jetties and my hoop up rate went to crap… i also use mustad 20/0 and eagleclaw 20/0 with that…(
i have debated to step down to sleven smaller diameter as ive seen some really trick snelling with small cable…
I prefer single strand for trolling and multi-strand for bottom fishing.

Start by feeding the wire through the eye and make the loop. Cross the wire over tight against the eye and hold it tight with one hand, then twist the hook with the other hand. It’s easier and tighter to twist the hook than it is to twist the wire. Make 5 twists, that’s all, you’ve got 7 or 8, then start the barrel wrap. As Skineej said, you only need about half that many barrel wraps. 5 turns is plenty.

You probably don't need anything that big. We've caught 300lb sharks on 80lb fluorocarbon before, so I am not convinced you need such large tackle even for big sharks. Granted, I am not a shark expert, but fishing is fishing. When exploring new fisheries, I like to start of light and work my way up, not the other way around. There is nothing to keep you from using a really light cable. You aren't really going to put 400 lbs of pressure on the fish. You really just need some sort of protection against the teeth that will only be rubbing up against the cable a little bit. Forget snelling. As Larry mentioned earlier, sharks aren't picky. They are big dumb predators. Just grab some light wire and crimps. Also, use smaller hooks. You would be suprised about how small bait hooks they are pulling for sailfish and big marlin nowadays.
One more thing about single strand wire. If the shark rolls on you, he can break you off. Single strand is great on animals that fight in a straight line. Sharks have a tendency to spiral, circle a lot, roll on the leader, etc. One small kink under pressure and you can kiss that shark goodbye.

That's a pro tip. Way easier on your fingers too!
you should not have a sharp edge, at the end of the barrel! Bend extra wire 90 degrees, and roll backward toward twist, the wire will snap off, leaving smooth edge
im working on it still folks… i didnt go mia… just been busy…
i have used cable to catch sharks from the beach from 5-8.5ft
I hate giving secrets away but the above is just incorrect advice. Twist one wire with two different methods on each end. First by spinning the hook and making the first loop close to the eye as mentioned above. On the other end of the wire, make another one by leaving a much larger first loop and not trying to ‘X’ so rapidly. Have them more flow together for a wrap or two. Put in vice or whatever to pull apart. 100% of the time, my way will be stronger.
