I am towing my boat down to John’s Island and will be moored out of Bohicket Marina for the better part of August. I spend most of my time fishing Long Island Sound for stripers, blues, porgys, fluke, and whatever else I can get on a hook. I have only fished off a dock or the beach during previous visits down south, so fishing via boat down there will be new. Can’t wait! Couple of questions 1) does anyone know a guide who would be willing to ride along with me for a half day and show me how and where to fish the surrounding waters? Give me a crash course on where to go and how to fish? 2) Are there any specific inland or near offshore spots that folks in here would recommend where the fish are bound to be biting? I will have some young fishermen with me (my kids) who enjoy catching more than fishing, so any tips and technics would be helpful. Looking forward to getting down there!! Thanks!

Your children would probably like to fish for sharks if they like catching fish. You can catch tons of them and they fight really good. Also, they are everywhere throughout the harbor and in almost if not all rivers and creeks around Charleston. Fish a bottom rig w heavy mono or wire leader with pyramid sinkers(3 or so oz) for sharks. I usually find them in holes 20+ feet deep. Charleston has a really good red fish population as well. They also fight really good but take much more skill to catch. You can fish for them many different ways such as: topwater, jigs, spoons, crank baits, live bait under corks or cut or live bait on the bottom. Red fish hang out around oyster mounds, docks, creek mouths, humps, rocks and grass. they like current and eddies. pretty much anything to bring bait or make it easy to catch. You can find spanish mackerel too and i usually sight fish and cast/troll spoons for them. Also, there are jacks, cobia and tarpon around here in the summer too. I dont know much about jack, cobia, or tarpon fishing but that will change soon. Hope this gets you started in the right direction. good luck.
also, you can catch shrimp, menhaden and mullet in a cast net for bait.
