First time in the Salt

So I am under the gun by some co workers to head out of bushy park salt water side and head toward the Cooper River Bridge. My question is I have never been in the salt with this boat or that area. Is the boat big enough , safe enough, and is there anything out of norm I need to be aware of?

grt, it is big enough and safe enough if you have the required safety gear. Something to be aware of is, where you fish there you are on the salt/fresh water line of the cooper river so you may need both license. If you go to the right it will take you past the NNPTS submarines and the river there is patrolled by armed gun boats and you can’t linger in that area they will run you off. I advise just go through there on the opposite side of the river. Those guys aren’t jerks but they have a serious job to do.

Good Luck

Another thought is the water in the cove where the ramp is can be very shallow an on a really low tide can be really difficult to get to the main river, and if it is a really high tide watch for slightly submerged crab pot floats.

Yes, the boat’s fine like Byte-Me said, and he’s 100% right about low tide. It’s NOT a good situation. A good hour or two before/after dead low makes life much easier.

Thanks, yes have both fresh and salt license and fire extinguisher , life jackets, whistle and flare gun. I love to fish and hope this goes well and opens some new opportunities. Have been down here 3 years and just fish Goose creek resivour because live in Hannahan and it’s easy .

Be sure to give that painted trailer good wash down after putting it in the salt.

Not a bad day started off down next to the bridge and then came back and fished a nice little finger I will be seeing again.

A true bass fisherman! Good job.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Next time make sure you dip that trailer in the fresh water side after you drop the boat in and after you pull the boat out. Spraying it down will not be sufficient to keep the salt from turning that trailer to dust. You can also run all your pumps, aerators, bilge, motor etc while its in freshwater.

I’ve also seen guys drop in on the fresh side and run down and back at full throttle for 10min. Best flush you can do.

Or, just buy a new galvanized or aluminum trailer so you dont have to worry about it. Either way, if you run salt that trailer will be toast in 2-3 years.

Plan B: Put in at Cypress Gardens boat landing. Go right to the Cooper then run down river to Bushy area to fish. This will keep salt away from the trailer and give you time to flush salt from the engine and pumps on the way back. It’s around 30min from tailrace to the saltwater side of Bushy. You also dont have to worry about running aground at low tide.

Thanks very much for the input and advice. I will give the Cypress Garden route a try next time out. The old Mercury eats the gas so the shortest route was first option. I have lots to learn and will be seeking tons of advice, reading old post and asking questions. The redfish was a blast to catch very tough fish also got a couple small sea trout.

I am also from the great lakes and new to the salt. The only thing that makes me nervous is running aground at low tide. I want to try bushy park in the near future. I will let you know if I hear any news that can help both of us out. Nice redfish BTW.
