I agree with fgl 123 and BigBallin go and think about catching fish not getting sick… I’ve been offshore more times than I can count and have never been sick… until I get back then it feels like the grounds swaying! Be careful in the shower afterwards:smiley:
If you do think you are going to get sick, do whatever you are going to do before leaving the dock. Take your pill, put on your patch, do your “don’t get sick” dance, whatever BEFORE leaving. Once the chumming starts, it’s usually too late to fix it.

i took alot of my friends out last year, and everytime i took someone out they got sick, after chumming up the water, they felt better.
No kidding about the shower! You would think it would be a good thing after a day offshore but I’ll be dammed if it isn’t a chore not to just fall over in there…Why is that? Never been sick when it wasn’t due to the night before btw

the semi circular canals in your inner ear, which make up the vestibular system. the horizontal and verical motion sends confusing messages to your brain through the VIII cranial nerve.
Scott, I think alot of it is in your head. That said, it doesn’t hurt to prepare yourself anyway and be on the positive side of the head game right from the get-go! I take ginger pills (fell victim to Mythbusters) starting a couple of days before and a bonine the night before (while rigging). Whether its the ginger pills or the bonine or just the mind-set that I’m squared-away (or maybe just too busy on the water), it’s been successful so far. Good luck and have fun!
I’m gonna have to agree with mac daddy, just get out there…think about fishing. If you get sick, then tough it out.
I made my first ride out last weekend. To be honest, I didn’t even think about sea sickness until the guys start asking me and joking around. By the time we left the dock I had already forgotten about it again. I couldn’t think about anything but being on the water and finding the fish. Most everyone slept on the way out, and the way back in, but I just sat in the chair taking it all in.
Didn’t feel sick once, until I got back to the house and took a shower. Closing my eyes in the bed was the worst feeling all day.
Anyway, can’t wait to get back out and do it all again this weekend
I believe getting sick is at least 80% in your mind. I have been sitting on the transom, head down rigging baits, feeling my stomach turn, and all of a sudden have a line go down, put a fish in the box and never think about or feel sick the rest of the day. To be on the safe side go with flat calms advice, meclazine night before and next morning before leaving. Eat just like you would normally, just stay away from heavy greese or real acidic foods. Someone else said stay away from sugar, well sugar is actually the main ingredient in Emitrol and other anti-nausea drugs it will actually make you feel better if you start to get sick, that is why Sprite or Coke loaded with sugar and carbonation settle the stomach. Now for those that say they have never been sick offshore here are my thoughts: If you have never slammed a boat into a dock, you have not docked enough boats. If you have never gotten turned around on the water at night, you have not been on the water at night enough. If you have never been sea sick before well you have not been offshor enough because sooner or later you will get sick! Some of us are more immune that others but if you keep after it enough the monkey will get on your back. Keep your mind on fishing and stay active and you have it 80% beat!

best advise yet, most of it is in your head, and you are already worried about it. Take a bomine the night before, and one in the morning, stay busy on the boat, help put out lines, drive the boat… and keep your mind off being sick…and tell the captain to get on the fish, you won’t get sick if you have something to do.
say when
So far I’ve only been queezy one time on little two foot rollers. Don’t know why, maybe 'cause the interval was so regular.
It is tradition to always crack open a beer first thing on the ride out before hitting the rocks and getting up to speed.
It is mind over matter!
If you don’t mind, it don’t matter!
Good luck.
Umm, you gonna eat that?©

Get something from the doc. Dont take meclazine(SP?) It works but its like taking a sleeping pill. Start the night before or get the patch. I have never been motion sick until going offshore. It is not worth the risk of a great fishing trip to not take something. It can ruin your day and its not just in your head.
my recomendation for first few times is get transderm patch. need prescription. put behind ear the night before and stays in system for 72 hours if you fish multiple days. does not make you drowsy, only dries your mouth, so drink more beer. if you a prone to motion sickness, being a “sissy” is better than being so sick you can’t get off the couch in the salon.
FD connection on Wadmalaw is Jeremy Gouge…
… And thanks for all of the comments, Do’s and dont’s … I was going to try to tough it out. I figured I have been out on some pritty bigh lakes for 12+ hours on an 18’ boat with some nasty conditions…Now I know it’s not the same as 3 to 5 foot seas but thats all I can compare to, but after those trips I had the same cant stand up on land that some of you guys felt…and the shower for some reason did seem worse had to hold on to the wall so i didn’t bust my but… But I think the last few post hit home… I have never been so I want to do everything I can to make this a good trip on my end… From what I hear if I dont catch Fish it will be because I aint fishing… and I always fish…
I agree with ZooCrew, a beer as you go through the harbor on the way to the jetties is what I always do. Most of the time I am perfectly fine, but there are those very few occasions when no matter what you do, you still might get a bit light headed. Don’t lay down, don’t go in the cabin, drink water or another beer, hopefully you will be catching fishand won’t have time to worry about it. But the patch behind to ear seems to work best for other people going with me, but put it on the night before. It does no good starting it in the morning. Good Luck.
