First Time Tarpon

Been fishing Bulls Bay a lot last week or two for flounder, trout, bass, whatever I could get into. Kept seeing big silver ones. Always wanted to try so I borrowed some big rods and off I went. To my surprise caught not only my first tarpon but my first two. They were big as hell but I have no clue what they weighed as I did not try and boat them. They were (**() near as long as my rod (7’). Really excited felt like I was the man for once. I will post pics as soon as I can figure out how.

Nice. Share the pics. What did you use for bait? If you don’t mind.

For bait I used large mullets. I think I got one really good lucky pic and was able to get two more fair ones. The jumper was the first pic, he jumped 3 or 4 times and took an hour and a half to get in and about killed me. The second fish was about an hour. Needless to say I was toast after that.

Happy I nailed this pic

Congrats. Was the mullet thick? Was out last weekend and didn’t see a lot of mullet. I keep waiting for the mullet run to start.

Wow, that is great. Love that beginner’s luck. Nice pics too!

Nice work. Stop now before your luck runs out. There are a ton of people who have tried countless times to catch tarpon around here without landing one.

How deep were you fishing?

Never give up on Bulls Bay! Nice work

Very nice. Never caught one, but got might sights set on it. Congrats

Awesome, can you elaborate on your rods and reels? I’m buying my tarpon gear over this winter ready for next august. I have 2 Penn mariner boat rods. I’m thinking a Penn fierce 6000 and 7000 with 50lb braid?

I did not see all that many mullets. One day I did see a huge mother load, maybe 3 acres worth, but that was it.
I used 6000 reels with heavy mono leader.
Yes I should quit now cause I was very lucky but I cannot. I am addicted to the silver drug.

Thanks for the info.
Yeah you are now going to be spending all your time looking for tarpon everytime you are in the boat. It happened to myself about 8 years ago and now every summer I have to sit every chance I get.

Wow! Good looking Silvers! Keep it up.

Way to take advantage of those earlier in the week sightings, tarpon are out there but you need to hit the spots when they’re hot. I’ve seen more tarpon fishing for other species. I always keep a heavy spinning kit on the boat and try to keep at least one horse mullet in the tank or a few pogies alive when I can. Great pics

That’s one heck of a day!

Congrats…I have spent quite a few days out there without jumping one.
