Started early and tried the topwater for a bit, but not even a bite. Went and caught some MM, because the shrimp were so small they slipped through my 5/8 net. First cast on the Z-man paddlerz and caught a pup red. That was it for the day. Really slow, although I’m new to this and don’t know where any spots are yet.

Guess I’ll be buying a 1/2"net this week. The 5/8 obviously isn’t what I was looking for.

Stick with the 1/2"
though, that way you can use it for Shrimp Baiting if thats something you are interested in

1/4" sinks too slow. I have both 1/2" and 3/8" and the 1/2" does the best in my opinion.

I have had expensive and inexpensive, they both tear the same when they land on an oyster bed, I have one I think I spent $40 on and I am happy with it. Thats just my $0.02

Good to know. Thanks Hurricane. You live and learn I guess. Just bought this net to use for shrimping, and got it because I’d catch larger shrimp. Was going for quality rather than quantity, but didn’t keep in mind catching bait. Even the MM’s were gettin gilled up in the net. Guess I’ll have to eat this net now that its non returnable. Oh well!

I have 2 nets I use. 1 3/8 cheap one for getting bait with and a larger shrimping net. That way I don’t worry about tearing up the more expensive one on oysters and the smaller cheap one works better in she shallow creeks.
3/8 mesh is good for catching mullet and shrimp, you have to use 1/2 for catching shrimp over bait
1/4" for bait. You will gill less mullet and let less bait pass through the mesh. 5 or 6’.
1/2" better quality net for shrimping of thats your plan. 6-8’

Here’s my 10 cents, my 2 cents is free
I have a 3/8" Betts Tyzec nylon that has worked really well for bait. Only the small glass minnows get hung up in it.
Reel Keep the 5/8 for shrimping. It will be very good for that. You will still catch smaller shrimp than you want. I have 1/2 and 5/8 nets and for shrimping I prefer the 5/8 mesh.
Mr Hardware
Mrhardware, that’s the plan. May just get a little cheaper net for bait casting because it’s gonnna get eat up by oysters anyway. Can’t wait for shrimping season. I may not really know how to inshore fish, but I (**() sure can shrimp. I used to think there was no skill involved in shrimping whatsoever, but after taking a buddy out once, I learned very quickly that you need to have good boat control, and most importantly, able to cast a net.

I use 2 nets as well. Cheap 1/2" WalMart net for bait and 1/2" 7’ super pro for shrimping. love the super pro but it’s really heavy. I am used to throwing but glad I have the other net since I take a lot of first timers with me and they have trouble throwing the heavier net.
