First Trip to the Jetties a success.

So me and a couple guys decided to do a little fishing Sunday since I didn’t have to work til 3. It was suggested that we go out to the jetties. Well I have never taken my boat out there before so I was a little hesitant but my buddy assured me we would be fine, that he has been out there a number of times. So we unloaded the boat at 7 from Wappoo Cut and the tide was high. The harbor was calm so we were to the jetties in no time. Well where I thought the jetties were. At high tide the north jetty was completely under water. The south jetty was only visible in a few spots. So we go to about midway on the inside of the south jetty and anchor up pretty quick. No problem. Caught maybe a dozen BSB and a few dink reds on shrimp. Then one of the big lines goes off and had a decent little fight for 5 minutes or so. While reeling the fish a large container ship was passing and kicked off a good 5 or 6 foot high wake and added some excitement.

Didn’t get a measurement but knew he was over slot so we grabbed a quick picture and let him swim away. Just after that another large boat went flying past and sent us on a roller coaster ride and the anchor pulled so we quickly pulled lines and started the engine cause the current was carrying us out fast. I fully understand now why everyone is very cautious out there. Anyway, we decided to move to the outside of the south jetty were the water was much calmer but didn’t catch much other than a few small blue fish.

Water temp was 61 and much clearer on the outside of the jetty. Smooth ride back in around 2pm.

Sounds like a great time! Glad you didn’t get any trouble from the shipping vessel, lol, I’m sure they toss a huge wake.

Sweet!

Good job, Rob. It’s always gratifying when a new experience is a success. I still haven’t worked up the nerve to take my boat out there. Soon, though…:sunglasses:

Thanks BB I surely would not have gone without someone who had a little experience or if it wasn’t very calm that day. There was another guy out there that I noticed he was pulling his boat up almost touching the rocks to drop his anchor and then let the current carry him back a little to fish. I thought he was crazy but I guess once you are more skilled you can do things like that. I’m no where near that! lol.
