fish & bait

Got a question from a newbie yakker. What do you use to keep your shrimp and minnows in. Obviously thought about a minnow bucket over the side but it seems like that would get hung up in the grass. Also trying to come up with the best method of keeping fish on ice. I thought of using a small trash bag in the front hatch area with the top of the bag over the opening, held in by the hatch lid strapped on, and a hole cut in the hatch lid like a trout creel. Has anyone ever seen anything like that or is there something obvious I’m missing. The back area is only big enough for a small cooler with ice and 6 drinks. Also while coming out Maybank toward Rockville on Thursday, three yaks were putting in at the first bridge. I thought I recognized Stinky Fingers but not sure. Would you guys please consider giving me a heads up next time you get together and let me tag along? Don’t care to learn where you fish as much as how you fish. Thanks for your help in advance. Hey Old-Ranger

That must have been some other good lookin’ Kayak-Stud you saw :stuck_out_tongue: It wasn’t me.

I use 2 of the Troll-right or flow through bait buckets (I think they’re called…the classic yellow and white buckets with a black spring load door). I have shrimp in one and minnows in the other. I put them in the kayak while paddling (too much drag otherwise) and refresh the water every 10 or 15 minutes by dunking them overboard. While fishing they go overboard. Tie one to 10 or so feet of rope and tie the 2nd one to the first one with 2 to 3 feet of rope (in series). The 10 feet of rope lets’ them float off so they don’t bang on the kayak, same with the 2nd piece of rope (i.e. the buckets don’t bang into each other)…gotta be stealthy.

Here’s photos of my Creative Feathers insulated fish bag, I’ve yet to catch a Redfish small enough to keep (Ooh darn) so I have not used my fishbag yet. I put 2 frozen 2 liter soda bottles filled with water, at the end of the day the bottles are still 1/3 frozen.

The last 1/3 of my bag is folded under to fit my kayak.

Hope that helps

I use the exact same bag(purchased from kayakfishingstuff.com)It works great. My only complaint is not enough insulation for hot days.

The more you fish, the better you lie.

I use the same bait bucket system as stinky. I have also heard about a guy who used some schedule 80 (the really thin PVC) and drilled small holes in it and put a removable cap on it to put his minnows in. He said it had almos no drag and kep the mudders alove just as good as the yellow and white buckets. Haven’t tried it yet though…

I’ve heard of this method before as well. It always brings the image of a Pez dispenser for mud minnows to mind…
