Fish Cleaning

Not looking at rule book so going to ask here. No fish cleaning station where I launch. So wondering if it its legal to clean your catch why on the water. I currently don’t, I freeze the remains and throw out on trash day.

I think they have a rule against cleaning your fish on the water. The man wants to be able to count and measure whole fish, not a bunch of fillets. I think it is OK once you are at the landing, which gives the man an opportunity to check your catch. You sould look in the regs to confirm this.

It would be nice to clean the catch on the water and give the remains back to nature. However I do believe spec is right. Personally, I clean mine, freeze the remains and take them back to the water next time I go out. That way its recycled, plus the fish and crabs will love ya for it.

All fish are required to be landed head and tail intact.

Olde Man Charters

I figured as much just wanted to check.

Don’t get caught with cleaned fish on the water. The carcasses make great crab bait for traps.

You can filet a fish and still land it with head and tail intact. It took some convincing, but DNR let us go with that one time. The number of filets DO need to match the number of carcasses.
