Wrong . NN,nb and fh are three fellas I would not second guess.

hake, have heard it called cusk… is not a lizzardfish

I have caught larger ones offshore during the winter. Good eating.

It’s a hake. Lots of them off Cape Cod. They use to drag nets for them and we would tuna fish behind them.

They remind me of a small tile fish. Barbawang should know if they in the same family.

They’re in the cod family

hake are family Merlucciidae, cod are Gadidae

ROI ain’t helping pay off these loans…

Maddies Daddy, I did 5 minutes of intensive google and wiki work for you. Phylogenies are below- tilefish and hake are different at the Order level. The former is Perciform, and both cod and hake are Gadiform (which is latin for “cod-shaped”, and where I believe Mr. Flair was going with this).

Tilefishes:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Perciformes
Family: Malacanthidae

Cod:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Gadiformes
Family: Gadidae

Hake:
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Actinopterygii
Order: Gadiformes
Family: Merlucciidae

Yes - exactly . True cods have 3 dorsal fins. Thanks for tagging in!

Man, that brought back some bad memories from college days. The fishes(hake) body resembles a tilefush ...the face...not so much. By the way(BTW), my pig/dog/and me want to know when the next Dog Party is? Asking for the pig.

yes hake for sure…used to catch them like crazy up in Jersey during fall/winter used to call them whiting …excellent eating fish. real good smoked…but were mostly fished out by the time I left about 12 years ago…great bluefin tuna bait

For god’s sake it’s a Black Sea Bass. I’ve caught tons of them (only bigger) when I lived up in Jersey.
