Fish ID??

Hi,
I caught this at TNT hole. Any idea what it is? I looked through the fish ID spreadsheet on this site but it didn’t look like any of the fish. It had a HUGE mouth, big eyes and very short stub body.

That’s a toadfish

oyster toad fish.

AKA: dogfish

nasty things, good for nothing.

…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

i call them oyster crushers.

That is a juvenile MONKFISH. Dang good eating wen they get bigger!

they can make two distinctly different sounds- a grunt and a “boatwhistle” used in courtship displays at night. they grunt at you when hooked sometimes, and will also make your thumb hurt if you put it in their face.

23, good for nothing? how many hundreds of dollars have been awarded for them in this county alone? i’ve been told they eat pretty well- not much meat on the stubby tail, but one day i will try it.

I think you’re right about it being a Toadfish. The Monkfish has very sharp teeth but the fish I caught has what looked like cows teeth for grinding. It was UGLY!

Thanks for the help

oh yeah… definitely. Monks have nasty teeth… I thought I saw them in the pic, it was hard to tell. Up in the NE, the toadfish are called Oyster Crackers and tend to be more of an orange-brown-puke color. LOL.

contact saltfisher…he is a expert on those and catch and release technique

miss’n fish’n
