Caught this in my freshwater lake (pond) (Miami)…
This is a 5wt rod, for scale, so it was a decent size fish. Warmouth maybe? Had really heavy lips and a few sharp teeth.

I would have said Warmouth at first glance but they usually have more green. I dont know. Nice looking fish.

Cool! Roger that. I’m talking about the freshwater and inshore species down there. In a way, it’s probably not a good thing to have all those invasive/non-native species, but in another way, it has to make for some fun afternoons on the ponds and canals. I know I’d be spending some time chasing peacocks.

Lee, I’ve got a small lake in my back yard (appartment complex), and I rarely see anyone else fishing in it. I think that the canals are fished pretty hard. The cool thing about the peacocks and other cichlids is that they seem to be most active right in the hottest part of the day. Since I work from home most of the time, I just take a 15 minute break a couple times a day (starting around lunch) and just take a walk around the lake with the rod. If I see some fish, I’ll cast to them. If not, I just go back to work. Little effort with sometimes big rewards. I pretty much see peacocks just about every time I walk around the lake. Some days they are more active than others.
The thing that sucks down here though is that everything is about the live bait. I choose the fly because it seems a lot more fun and challenging, plus the light tackle is a blast. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll pick up a bucket of shiners for my neice and nephew when they come into town since they are just learning, but that kind of explains the mentality down here (i.e., it’s not about the experience, it’s about what you put in your cooler). I’m just glad that I have a little semi-private spot to play around in. If the FWC didn’t bring these species in, I don’t think that they would have a lot of fishing left. South Florida is their own worst enemy.
Peacock bass in the back yard. That’s living. I just saw your other thread on this. Nice pics. I’m jealous. I bet those things would bust a SR-5 Shad Rap or a fluke. Keep posting the pics.
