My daughter caught this in 150 feet today - She ask me what it was and I didn’t have a clue? It looks like a mix between a Vermillion and a Big Eye?
Toro
Thanks Cap!
I can honestly say that is a first for us!!

Check out the drop down menu under Sciences and check out the fish ID section. Some good pic on our fish.
I didn’t know there was a Toro fish, I though cappy was pulling your leg. I’ve heard sushi called Toro.
The below looks to have a lot more scales than yours??

Must be 2 types of Toro? The picture Fred posted, is a different fish! Fred’s is called a Short Toro! Maybe Downandout’s is a Long Toro? Different dorsal fin!
there are two types, both are EXCELLENT table fare!! I hope you kept it and ate it

Dang, you just made my day Paul! I knew I didn’t need new glasses:smiley:
It had a perfectly round clear ball shaped lens in its eye
I caught one a few years back and pardoned him cause he was so cool looking.

Mr Paul,
When it comes to bottom dropping off shore, is there a fish that is not good table fair? Honest question. I won’t ask what can be kept.
Fred,
Grunts and I think Silver Snapper are disgusting!
Waiting on Paul’s answer on this one…

Grunts and silvers (red porgys) are excellent in my opinion. White grunts are not the best but still very good if they are large enough. I’ve never tried - but heard that morays should not be eaten. Dont eat large cudas (cigutera) but I have eaten smaller ones (under 10 lbs)Very good. I do not like atlantic sharpnose sharks. No matter what I do they taste like ammonia. Most reef fish are very good food!
also caught non-native species -

judged too small to clean he was stabbed and buried at sea
I have to disagree with ya on this one natureboy!
IMO - Silvers taste like Iodine and for some reason any fish named GRUNT just can’t taste good!

Fried everything taste good.
I’m with Gut Wrench on this one.
We had a bunch of folks over for a fish-fry, filleted mostly ring-tails and grunts, (BSB were off-limits).
Everyone loved the fresh fish. No complaints, No left-overs.
Don’t let SAFMC see the picture it will be the next fish on their list.

Cool catch.
It’s a Bigeye, Priacanthus arenatus.
We also have short bigeye’s, Pristigenys alta, as shown in previous pictures.
Although not snappers at all (they’re Priacanthids) they are excellent eating.
Their flesh remind me of alfonsins, really. Flaky, white, somewhat sweet.
