Fish id

Fished Copahee today and caught a nice 25 3/4" Red.

Then I caught a baby shark.

After catching the shark I thought I saw some trash floating around the grass so I went to scope it up and then it jumped into the kayak. Need help with an id of what kind of fish it is.

That’s a juvenile Atlantic Tripletail. Tripletail are fantastic eating fish and while I’ve never seen one so yellow, apparently that’s their juvenile stage.

Awesome catch. Never seen a yellow one either.

Thanks Rapchizzle it looked like one but then the color threw me a little only ever seen adults on tv and most of the time on a plate. Also explains why it look like trash when it was swimming on its side in the grass :sunglasses:

Nice red! Did that tripletail startle you when it jumped in?

Lol that’s crazy, it just jumped into the kayak with you. Price less. Put him on the hook, sling him out, and fight him back in… no sense in letting him give up that easy lol.

Yes it did because it jumped from about two feet away. Now I have a new mission at Copahee, try and catch an adult Tripletail for the dinner plate

Hey this is Mike, met you at the pool earlier. That is crazy that a triple tail was in there. I caught them a bunch in Florida out of Canaveral. Never saw a yellow on before.

Seen one about twice that size floating near the surface behind Sullivan’s last year. Got close to it and it took off like a flash.

I wonder what causes them to do that? The one I saw was yellow/orangeish. No doubt a tripletail.

They float on the surface like that so they look like floating debris which attracts smaller fish, making it easier for them to feed.
