Fish ID

A coworker asked me if I could id this fish.
I have no idea… it was caught somewhere off the coast of Florida.
Don’t really have any other details at this time.

Looks like a monkfish, but I didn’t know they were found as far south as Florida.

Sea Robin family!

I would also call it a type of sea robin. Those things can hurt you [:0] I once had to have someone airlifted of our boat at the snapper banks from a sea robin sting.

Butt ugly whatever it is.

It seems that the mouth is too small to be a monkfish or any of the sea robins I’ve seen. Definitely has the “walking fins” that are common to the sea robin, so it could be somewhat related. It looks pretty thin too.

I think duck4gis nailed it... To be specific, polkadot batfish (Ogcocephalus cubifrons)...

How did it taste?

It’s a long nosed carpet croaker

I haven’t heard anything from the person that caught it… I wonder if he ate the fish…

Batfish. I’ve seen those diving here but they aren’t nearly as cool as some of the basketball sized frog fish I’ve seen.

Cool fish.

Batfish are actually a family of anglerfish, typically found in shallower water than other families in the order.

Here are a few photos of a deepwater anglerfish (Sladenia shafersi) that we caught in about 2000? depth off SC a few years back.
