Was throwing the cast net the other day and came across this fish. Was hoping someone could help ID it. If you aren’t able to from the pic, it had a very box-like shape to its front half. A small mouth sticking straight out from its snout, its underside was pure white, and its sides were a mottled grey and black. The pink color in the picture is a reflection of the glove I was wearing coming off its body.
Wow I have no clue… crazy looking!

When you see “Old Glory” waving in the breeze, know that it is the dying breaths of our fallen hero’s that makes it wave.

It looks like the Silver Toadfish King of the pier is talking about. Same prominent lateral line.

Yep, I think King of the Pier got it right. First time I have seen one of those. One day at the Jetties this past summer we caught more puffer/blowfish in one day than I have all my years of fishing combined.

Wow, never seen one of those, interesting.
Are you talking about the guy shorts in the pic.I submitted LOL.http://getfishing.com.au/speciesid/silver-toadfish/
Catch those often in the cast net.

Thanks for the research KOTP. It didn’t puff up so must not have felt threatened, but based on that link you seem to be right on all accounts. First time I’ve seen one.
I pulled one of those up in the harbor while shrimping on Sunday… I made my brother pick it up and toss it out. Good call on my part.
Crazy! That is a new one for me.
After looking into it more and inquiring with someone in the marine division of DNR, it looks like the common name for this fish is a smooth puffer fish, Lagocephalus laevigatus. The silver toadfish in the link from KOTP meets the physical description but the geographic distribution is mostly around Australia. Good call, TTKarl!
Smooth puffers from the mid atlantic waters are safe to eat.
Toad tails are pretty popular in Virginia

LMAO!
This looks like the same thing? Was caught in 110ft.
oops, that looks more like an oceanic puffer, which would make sense coming from that area.
