What happens when you put 5 large menhaden in a bucket for 30 minutes? They die. I think its a pretty feasible explanation. A school as big as that meandering around and getting stuck in a pocket (tidal pool) when the tide goes down. They would exhaust the O2 supply pretty quick. S**t happens, no reason to be alarmed.
