Fish Kill

Witnessed a half mile of floating dead fish today on a creek on IOP in Wild Dunes. Initially I thought maybe just mullet, but there were monster reds and flounder mixed in with spots, perch, bass…you name it. Granted the water is surrounding condos and the golf course, but was scratching my head as to what happened. Thoughts?

I would call DNR.

Definately call it in.

Called it in. DNR is on it.

Response:

I sent a team out on Tuesday and another is heading out there today to follow-up. We sampled in 3 locations along the creek. Each sampling site had an algal bloom, and two sites had oxygen levels that were low, so the kill was likely due to a combination of factors. Blooms are natural occurrences and usually dissipate on their own, but we will continue to follow-up as needed.

There has been a huge kill off of big reds and manhadean in north inlet too. Mullet where still abundant however.

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

If there was an algae bloom, then a lake management company more than likely has the account on the golf course to treat the waterways. My guess is the golf course called in the algae bloom, they came out and treated it too heavy, or there was a planktonic bloom occurring and the treatment knocked out the bloom too fast. Also, didn’t help when the rain storm knock oxygen out of the water as well, that’s double dipping in the pond. Been doing this for 15 years and that is a no no with rain on the way.
