I wasn’t suggesting that you were new to Charleston but that you were new to this “Charleston Fishing” website and may not have read the DNR link on the other Disscusions forum!!

The trout need to be put back as DNR has asked. There’s a good reason for this. As responsible fisherman we need to do whatever is necessary to help the trout population so we can start to keep them again and enjoy a good trout fish fry. The more that fisherman ignore this, the longer it will take for them to make a comeback.

Well said…nice way to educate somebody without being a horses azz

DNR should have closed the season if it is that much of a problem. But yes we should take the responsibility of regulating what is taken to the frying pan and what is released. I will take part in releasing all I catch. I remember when I was a child going out and catching hundreds of trout in a day and now im lucky to catch a hand full in season.

Welcome to the site new folks. DNR can’t close anything, only state legislature can. They can make suggestions based on actual numbers of fish they net and compare them to prior years counts, and the population is waaay worse than it was in 2001 when the population was bad.

I’d like to believe DNR made that request so that legislature WOULD NOT close the trout fishery and anglers would police themselves. They’re trying to keep us on fish, not prevent us from catching them.

Pretty fish, though, and congrats.

One of the great things about trout is they can recover rather quickly if we allow them. Key word “if”. 2 bad winters in a row. With all this global warming happening, I’m guessing it’ll be freezing azz cold again next winter! Then what will be left? Black sea bass?

Nice catch Peanut.

So do we want government to impose even more regulations upon us, or do we want to take personal responsibility and do the right thing?? Why do we always have to wait until big brother says so? That is why all the big gov’t jack legs out there are gaining so much power!

That is one heck of a nice trout you caught there Peanut

Nice trout! But I’ll chime in on the DNR suggestion of catching and releasing…especially those big breeder stock!

<weather geek> The cold snap in the eastern US has very little, if anything, to do with “man-made climate change” (or whatever else you want to call it). Weather runs in cycles, and we’re in one in which the East runs a bit colder than normal, especially in winter. Check out some info on the Arctic Oscillation (AO) and the North Atlantic Osciallation (NAO) and their effect on temperatures in the Nothern Hemisphere. </weather geek>

I agree. I was really proud of a lot of you folks on here for taking the initiative to release trout this year, rather than waiting for the gov’t to tell you that you have to. I think that most fishermen will police themselves responsibly. I really wish that DNR could make the calls instead of the legislature though. They just seem to be more sensible than politicians…but then who isn’t?

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
