Fish this weekend?

I have been wanting to try out striper fishing, and have wanted to head down to Murray. I really don’t have any idea what I am doing. Will the water be too muddy to do anything this weekend? Can someone give me some basic tips on what to do or look for?

We had rain here yesterday, but not a lot. But I think Lots of Muddy water will be flowing down from greenwood. If the little River isn’t overly muddy, I would fish there. Technique will depend on what this cold front does to the fish. They were up on the bank, if they still are you want to run freelines and planer boards. They may have dropped down into the channel in the deeper holes, if so then use downlines. If both rivers are muddy, fish below the mud line, probably around #3 or spinners.

Thanks for the info. Do you troll close to the bank with the free lines and planers? What kind of bait/rig and what size planer? I don’t have any downriggers to run downlines with. Any other ways that work? Thanks again. I know these may be dumb questions…

There is a ton of general info here with different Links up top for like planer, trolling, etc. Only thing i really didnt see on here but i may have missed it was trolling speed. Pulling FL and Pb u can run anywhere from .4-.7mph . Thats a general rule of thumb can go slower and faster.

Hope this helps.

A downline or downrod is not the same as a downrigger. A downrod is simply a weighted rig (Carolina rig style)with an egg sinker of an ounce or two that will enable you to get a live bait down to where the fish are holding. You can Google it to see what I’m talking about. You can also get some more reports from the Midlands Striper Club message board on this site. http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=67
Folks are gonna be tight lipped since we have a tournament tomorrow but you might find some useful info.
Hope this helps - Good luck!

I really appreciate the help. Looks like good info from both links. I didn’t know there was a tournament tomorrow. May try to go Sunday instead so I don’t get in the way. What time of day seems to be the best to get a bite?

Here is another one for you

I don’t know how far you are traveling to come down to Murray, but if you are going to try to become proficient fishing for stripers, I think you should consider joining Midlands Striper club. I’m not a member. Mostly I fish for largemouth bass and white perch. I do know several of their members and the ones I know are always friendly as well as being good striper fishermen. Their membership fee is about what I spend for gas in one bass tournament and the club map combined with other information would easily save you that much in gas money. Sorry if this sounds like a commercial, but if I ever decide to be a striper fisherman I’ll definitely be joining their club.
Also, check to see if there is a striper club close to where you live.
