I got out today around 330 and fished the rising tide. The reds were pushing hard today and the seemed to be keying in on shrimp. I managed to catch about a dozen good sized shrimp in the cast net today. I was surprised at how big they were. I was on to the mud flats for about a minute before I started seeing fish. I managed a nice 28 inch red on the second cast. Over the next 15 min I picked up three more on jerk baits before the water became to high to sight fish any more because of the wind. I moved down the bank and I was amazed how quickly the reds moved into the grass today. I saw a alot of shrimp in the grass and I figure this behavior will become the norm. I picked up a couple more working the grass line before It was deep enough for me to navigate the grass too.
Once in the grass I switched to cut bait and picked up a few more before I could get out and walk on the flats. I set up two cut bait rods and got out the fly rod to try a get a tailer. It took a while before I started seeing fish because all I could look for were them crashing bait or fins out of the water. I picked up a few more fish on cut bait but never was able to find anything that I could get close enough to with the fly. I moved to another flat and began seeing tailers right away. I almost ran the first one over.
It ended up being pretty much the same deal, a couple of fish on cut bait. I did manage to get on fly by a tailer and I am not sure if he tried to eat it or got spooked. It did get hung up for sec but I may or may not have had one take it. After that the wAter got to high and the fish did not seem to want to go in further back on the flats. So I called it a day.
I guess a caught about 15 reds today between 22" and 30".
TooBusy- as long as we have cut bait we should do well on Tuesday with having to do too much paddling. As long as the weather plays nice.
