PeaPod is right on. The new Summerville store is excellent as well. The staff is friendly and helpful and the store itself is very attractive and well stocked. The parking is good even if you are towing your boat…which we were the last time we went there. I would highly recommend stopping by to check it out. The prices may be a little higher that WM, but I think you will find the selection to be on a totally different level.

Strike 2. 1 more and I’m sending my associate over there to do something to you.
hip hop musician person?
and if you feel like you are spending a little more money at a local tackle shop try getting some ■■■■■■■■ on how to rig a Z-Man paddlefin on a weedless jighead at WalMart…blank stares is all you will typically find…whereas the guys at the local tackle shops will not only help you with rigging but also tell you where to fish…
soul diva? I don’t know this chit PeaPod, come on gimme a break, don’t cap my knees ok?
my experience has always been that a guy who really knows his trade will not put his customers behind the eightball on priceas part of his knowledge is where and when to buy. the chain stores being a lot cheaper is a myth created by the chains as they exploit a super low price on a particular item (usually low end stuff) ALWAYS GIVE THE KNOWLEDGEABLE LOCAL GUY AN OPPORTUNITY! u will normally be serviced much better and at little or no price disadvantage… cheers
Business would pick up if Mike put a topless hottie selling tackle.LOL We old farts would cash our SS checks, retirement checks and buy crap we will never use.LMAO
First of all, “I never buy fishing tackle from WM”, and do support local shops 95% of the time. But it’s hard to buy all tackle at the local shops, because they don’t ever put things on sale. The few times they do, it’s not anything but the cheap stuff. I’m putting together a jigging set up using two local tackle shops now. The total rig w/ line is costing me $265.00. I searched the internet and found if I had bought the same set up online from a larger tackle shop, I would have paid $200.00, saving $65.00. If I had not had Gift Certificates, I would have had to purchase online. Saving $60.00 for me is a day on the water fishing. My policy is, “no box stores!” The larger tackle shops in other states are pretty good to check out online. If nothing else, it will give you bargaining power. just my 2cents.
Many of the local shops will ‘price match’ most other stores if you just tell them you can get the same product cheaper somewhere else. Several places matched WM prices on Gulp and other lures for me on several different occasions. I never knew they would do that until I tried it once. Everyone won’t do price matching, but many will. You just don’t know until you ask. Many local shops will price match Internet prices as well…just print out the catalog page and take it with you to the tackle shop.

Beyond the additional knowledge and selection, you get quality at the local tackle shops. When I started salt fishing I picked up tackle at WM. Several broken swivels, straightened hooks, lost fish, etc. later the S’ville CA opened, and I’ve pretty much used them ever since without a single problem.
Even if WM carries a name like Eagle Claw or such, they push the manufacturers so hard on price that they have to sacrifice quality in order to do business with them.
Then they drag that manufacturers reputation down with it. I believe they sold Penn at one point, and Penn is just now starting to get its reputation back.
Well said Vinman…Shipping and warranty can also play into the cards. I know here at HPT we also give an additional extra year of warranty on penn and shimano reels when purchased through us. Sometimes it is an unbeatable deal you can find online, sometimes though not so much when all factors considered. just a thought
luckily for me, i’ve never bought from anywhere other than the local shops. actually just 3. it’s been the relationship i’ve established with the local tackle shops that keep me going back, even if it’s a little more expensive. for serious or recreational fishermen you’re able to get more involved with what’s going on locally, share information and stay up on current events and rules.
it would be nice however, if local tackle shops would give CF.com members a discount for buying local. it would boost there business and create even more loyalty.
Some one mentioned saving 65 bucks. Not a small amount of money and please do not get me wrong here. I do know that talking with a local shop when I had an idea of what I thought I wanted to buy, saved me some money because these guys know what works…
