FishFinder

Hey guys - silly question BUT - I have a Lorance LMS480…shows fish on the screen BUT where are they…behind, forward, or on the sides of the boat ???

Where is the transducer mounted? If it is on the transom, the fish shown on the screen are under the stern and right behind you. The unit shoots in a cone, straight down, if you have the A-scope feature turned on, it will show you real time of what is swimming through the cone of signal. The further the object is to the left on the display, the longer the distance behind you. When I anchor on a piece of live bottom / ledge, I try to stop the boat at just the point that the structure just starts to show on the sounder.

I have the Lowrance HDS7. Is the A-scope feature always on or is this a setting you need to select?

Also even when stopped I see stuff going from right to left on the screen, will it show the fish going from left to right?

I would not depend on those “fish” on the screen actually being fish though… at least not with an older unit.

SellsFish is spot on about reading the fishfinder, IMHO. I take a marker bouy with me and when the structure first shows, I throw out the marker. Then I check out the current direction, come back around and drop anchor 75 ft upcurrent of the marker - - it takes that long to get a good hook on the bottom - - then adjust the scope as needed to get set up on your marker. On a good day, it won’t take over 3 tries…:wink:.
