Fishin' 6/9/2012

Had an invite to fish with Ken (Slickdeck) and his cousin on his boat Saturday. Left MI about 5:30am and headed north. Started out with a grwon up spainish. Trolled a bit more with nothing but short strikes. Decided that was enough of that and started bottom dropping. First fish was an undersized B-liner. Next up was the rare and endangered BSB, we must have caught 120 of them throughout the day. Lots of keepers were returned to grow some more. Caught plenty of nice 16 inch fish and a couple Ken’s cousin termed “A loaf of bread”, they were. Mixed in were some good sized grunts and a porgy or two. Sharks were also caught by the boatload. We were sure that we hooked a couple of groupa but none made it into the fish box.

Didn’t have too much competition out there though which was nice. Funny of the day was a dude fishing with a 50W for BSB. Wonder why they didn’t load the boat with them. Guess I should have given them some of my dropper loop rigs to chain together so they could have gotten about 12 or so on at a time.

Ended up with enough filets to make a few meals, enough action to make a good night’s sleep and a good time with some good people.

Thanks for the invite Ken.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

So you DO have one friend that’ll invite you fishing. I was wrong. You buy that aluminum boat yet?

Not yet, gotta get the big boat back up and running first. Just about got all the gas out of it so I can move forward with a new tank and lines. T-Top is at Cramer Metals then on to Sharps for some new canvas. Still trying to decide on the new leaning post and other mods I’m going to do. Might as well get it all done now while it’s down for the tank replacement.

I’m definitely getting the Sea Ark, just won’t be until this project is done. I knew it was coming, just hoped it would be later.

Sure did have a busy day! The seas were nice and the temp was comfortable. Suprised about the lack of grouper…not even a short or scamp? We’ll keep trying…Ken

Im coming to MI for a week at the end of June. How far and what do I look for for BSB fishing? I usually try for spanish and Kings and fish around 15 miles. Any word on any Kings or Cobia yet?

You’re about right. Target the artificial reefs 10 miles or more offshore. You shouldn’t have a problem limiting out on the bass. Kings have been strangely absent, spanish are here, cobia are scattered, spadefish are all over…good luck…Ken

sounds like a fun day…we took my friends 43’ Viking out of Little River Saturday…Had fun but not that impressed with Little River action. Only caught 2 dolphin… temp was a little cool at 75.5 but it was a nice day on the water anyway.
