Fishing a spoon!

What is the technique when fishing a spoon? Get a weedless spoon and jig it or reel it fast?

It depends. I catch a lot of flounder and reds on a gold spoon with a trailer. Throw it tight to structure and work it slowly along the bottom. Speed up your retrieve as the water temps come up.

I also catch blues and spanish ripping it through the water as fast as I can.

I would recommend a weedless spoon in gold or white/red. Use grubs or skirts as trailers. trout, reds and flounder will hit them.

Not to hijack this thread but do I understand correctly that you attach a grub directly to the hook on the spoon so that it trails behind the spoon? What is that just extra temptation?

You bet! Although it is not necessary but seems to help.

It is the same concept in freshwater when you put a curly tail on a skirted spinnerbait. Again, not really necessary but can help. It mimics the tail action of a small fish.

Thanks for the info. I might try this. I am always up for something different.
