fishing ad-ons

i have an ambush kayak wich is made by ocean kayak. it is made for hunting and fishing. i want to get it “rigged” for fishing. and i was just wondering what yall think are some good add ons for the kayak. also is there some way to make some sort of livewell or something to keep menhaden, and shrimp alive. the mud minnows are easy i just put them in the bait bucket. but i usually cant keep the menhaden or shrimp alive. any advice on what to get. thanks

Some of my favorites are scotty style rod holders. (http://www.scottypaddlesports.com/pages/rodholders/rodholder_pages/baitcaster.html) You have many different mounting options and accessories like three rod holders, fish finder mounts, etc. Check out some of their gimball mounts to be used with flush mount holders.

Some sort of anchor trolley system is really handy also. Check a post from a few weeks ago about setting one up. It isn’t rocket science, so just do what works for you. With the trolley system, I have been using a cajun anchor and now my new favorite toy, the Captain Dicks stakeout pole. This thing is REALLY cool. You can pole with it, use it through scupper holes, and anchor in up to 6 feet or so of water. In the shallows, it beats the heck out of other anchors.

For my live well, I just use a five gallon bucket and a 12volt aerator. I just picked up a 12volt power system that runs on D batteries from West Marine, and I think this is going to work really well for the aerator and a fish finder down the road.

The box is waterproof and was only about $35. I just had to take the alligator clips off and add a cigarette lighter plug to the pump. I’ll let you know how that works.

You can always just get a AA powered bubbler for shrimp. Menhaden are just a pain in the arse to keep alive.

Go to Time Out. Bought both yaks form there, they have all sorts of ad ons.

If a man wakes up early to go fishing he 's sleep deprived, If a man wakes up late to go fishing he’s fish deprived

radio shack sells a rechargeable 12 volt battery(typically used as back-up on home security systems)4"x4"x6". I have ben running my electronics with it for a year and think I used the back-up 1-2 times $35 + $40 for 1.5 amp trickle charger(wal-mart)and you’re in bussiness:wink:

The more you fish, the better you lie.

DolphinD,

Where can I find this Captain Dicks stakeout pole. I was a little hesitant to google it, but when I did I got nothing. Can you tell me more about it. Thanks!

Slixter, We sell them at Time Out and you can get them from Captain Dick’s directly ( www.captdick.net ) I think that kayak fishing stuff .com sells them as well.

You can use it through a scupper hole, with an anchor trolley, or just clip it to some deck rigging on the boat. I have used it as a push pole as well. This thing is really cool!! Whether you get it from me, from CaptDick direct or make something on your own (I have tried and it was never as solid as the real thing!) get something like this if you have a sit on top!!!

Thanks DD. I’ll come check it out at Time Out.
