Well my vacation is over. Hilton Head is beautiful and the marsh is as well. It took a lot of exhausting paddles against wind and tide current and a couple times getting skunked but I finally figured out a pattern on the last day and made it count. I started the week off with my personal best redfish, almost 30 inches. It took my kayak for quite a ride around that flat and was quite a rush!
I caught a small rat red, and also hooked a really good one that came loose after pulling about 30 feet of line out. I didn’t let this nice slot sized red get away though. I got it on a SUMKINA Bubble Belly and it was one of the best seafood dinners I’ve ever had.
I also caught 20-30 sea trout, all short except one 16 incher that we also ate.
I have to say, I’m very disappointed in the lack of help I received from the kayak anglers on this forum. Maybe in Tennessee we understand southern hospitality better but we would NEVER ignore a fellow kayak angler wanting to learn as was done to me. Several of you never even responded to my PM’s and I got only one response to a thread I started with a ridiculous, no help response. Do better in the future, it’s bad form. The kayak angling community is supposed to be close knit.
MidTenn,
I’m glad you had fun…congrats on the fish!
Sorry for your disappointment in receiving detailed info - I did respond to your post with my main technique for fishing unfamiliar water. I am here in Charleston, and not familiar with the HH area. You’ll find that most of the folks that cruise this part of the forum are here in Charleston. Also, this section of the forum doesn’t quite get the traffic it used to…in those instances, there is a wonderful “search” feature on the forum where you can type your query and find older info.
Once again - congrats on your catch…

Nice fish! But really, do you need to get that fired up about not being responded to? Maybe asking in the Hilton Head specific forum would be better… If you are mad about having to make long paddles and getting skunked then I suggest not kayak fishing ever again, as this is part of the journey. Personally, I would feel better about being able to figure out the patterns and what not by myself despite the lack of help… I wouldn’t come bash the members on the website who may never help you if you ask questions in the future.
Fish tremble at the sound of my name.
Fair enough, but it really annoyed me that I PM’d people who were very active posters in this forum specifically for kayak fishing and was ignored. It annoyed me because I’d NEVER treat anyone that way. My work ethic enabled me to find fish anyway, yes. That’s who I am. And, no, I’m not mad about making long paddles and coming home empty handed. I’ve been yak fishing for a few years now and when that happens, I’m already planning my next trip. At the end of that, I went kayaking at the very least. I got fresh air and a shoulder workout.
No hard feelings with anyone, I just vented a bit. Here’s a video I put together of my trip. Watch in HD, turn up the volume, and enjoy.
