My only guess is the established invasive algae Gracilaria since the article is very vague and I’m not aware of any new mysterious grasses
It’s the brown clumpy stuff that breaks up in the springtime and washes up on the beaches, the flat green stuff is ulva and it’s native. Maybe I’m not getting the whole story…
EDIT: just spoke with another captain who encountered some offshore recently too. said where gracilaria is filamentous but it branches lots of places along the way and makes large clumps, this stuff was a simpler construction that was smaller and more leafy, i guess making it more clingy to the nets instead of clumping
