i have a good friend down there. Runs a very nice 68 hatteras and does charters from time to time. Not far to run so dont worry much about fuel. Tell him you know joseph from sumter.
Fished there a couple of years ago. A guy from the hotel said he new a guy. Went with him and we pushed a 20 ft panga off the beach with about twenty others, bought some live bait from another boat and took off. About 1/4 mile later we were trolling. Two rods and a twelve pack. The mahi bite was non stop. We were about 100 yards off the beach. Next thing I knew a guy comes by in a boat the same size with a 200 lb blue hanging out of it. The most fun I have had in a long time. Not the big expensive boats, just some guy and his friend. Cost me $100.
Not sure if you’ve already lined up a charter, but I just got back from Cabo and fished on the “Fish On”. I was on my honeymoon and the wife isn’t big into fishing (yet) so we only did a 1/2 day. Caught my first Marlin about 5 or 6 miles from shore and had an awesome time. Captain’s name is Yo Yo and he was great. He’s been charter fishing in Cabo for the past 14 years and speaks great english for a local. The boat was around 30 ft so definitely not the biggest in Cabo, but for 2-4 people the boat’s perfect. Two fighting chairs and all fairly new, top notch rods & reels. website is fishoncabo.com. If this tells you anything about the trip…after fishing for 5 hours with great company from Yo Yo & his mate, and a marlin on the boat, my wife now wants to get more into fishing and said she now understands what all the fuss is about and why I get up at 3, 4, or 5AM to go and do this! Whatever you do, do NOT let someone you meet “find” you a charter. These guys who pretend to be doing you a favor are actually brokers of sorts and will try to overcharge you for the trip and keep the difference. This is a perfectly legal and accepted way of doing business in Mexico so beware…these “brokers” are everywhere and will try to set up a deal for absolutely anything if there’s anything in it for them. Best way to beat these guys is to not make a decision on the spot and go to the boat’s website to make sure you’re not overpaying. Good luck & let us know how you do down there. Not sure if you’ve been down there before, but Cabo is a pretty cool little town…have fun!
Unless you get a good (great) referral like the one BlackCloud posted, then you are pretty much better off waiting until you get there and cruise the docks…You might be surprised at the discount you might get if you are ready to go with cash in hand. Or if you book them for a day or so later at least you will know what the boat, tackle, captain, etc are all about before you board.
Also, Mexico and most of Central America might (and do)book 5 different groups for the same day and flip you to another boat…not that it does not happen in the US, but you are usually told about it before you show up.
Rofield’s deal sounds like a winner to me. I have never been more then a couple miles off the beach at Cabo, although there are HUGE swells there that can go 40 to 50 feet at times, no problem since they are rolling swells, but a panga might get rather tense.
we booked with Martin Rios on the MEXITIME a 31’ Bertram, thank you all for sharing your information. It is greatly appreciated. We also will be fishing a second day from the all incusive trip my beautiful wife won, last year it was st. thomas, but no fish due to tropical storm. thanks again
